I'm busy ordering and collecting bits for my '29 Model A roadster, and have been looking for a modern transmission. The engine (from our '52 DeSoto wagon project) has it's original Fluid Drive and "GyroMatic" 4 speed, (which is available if anyone has a boat and needs an anchor). I'll use a HotHeads adaptor for whatever I choose, I don't want to row a 4 speed, I'm 65 and I've had plenty of cars with manual transmissions. I'm leaning towards a 700R4, for the deep low gear and overdrive, but was happy with the 350TH I had behind the 283 in my last roadster, a '34. Anyone have any input on what transmission would make this little engine happy? I've got a Ford 9" with mid 3's gears, should be a fairly light car.
Morning, I run a great little 276 DESOTO in my 32 coupe and use a 350 trans. Runs great and lots of fun. Highly suggest you check it out. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks Dee. Like I mentioned, I was happy with the TH350 in my '34, but I felt like it should shift one more time. I'm leaving the DeSoto engine alone, right down to the rebuilt 2 bbl, I thought it might be nice to have OD, that it might be a little more bottom end, lower RPM friendly than the rumpity-rump 283. The next thing is finding a decent trans, they're not as common as I'd hoped. Either one. Lot's of 4L60's out there.
I have a 727 Torqueflite that would work I used 2 in my last builds and they are bullet proof and in Ohio
I'm using a short tail TH350 behind the 330 Desoto in my 40/41 pick up. HHH adapter. Fingers crossed.
Hey FB! BB here. I mounted an A518 Dodge 4 speed (non lock up) 46RH auto behind the 330 Desoto. Hot Heads adapter, gear reduction starter, mini comp shift computer that handles up and down shifting, 4th gear, kick down and electric speedo/cruise connections. Had to do a little frame mod as it is basically a longer 727 but it fit without too much difficulty. I used 3:70 rear posi gears so the 4 speed will make it a bit more drivable at freeway speeds.
I run 700-r4 with 370 gears 2100 rpm at 70 mph and 235 75 r 15, hhh adapter with starter right side for steering clearance this is a great combination
I agree withBB in using a A518 or a 200r4 as they give you a nice overdrive and are not so huge and parts are easy to get. Plus adapters are easy to come by
