Technical Is a 56 Corvette rear end the same as a 56 Chevy sedan rear end?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 56don, Sep 30, 2020.

  1. Everything is in the title. Are the rear ends interchangeable?

IIRC the axles are different lengths for open and posi rear ends.

  4. 57 was first year posi. Axles are 1/8" shorter.

I think the difference Jim is that the Corvette housing has brackets on the top opposite the spring pad for a traction type bar.

When did it start Scotty? My 62 had them although it was missing the bars.

  11. 58 or 59. My 57 doesn’t have them, my 60 did.

The early Vettes were built on a 49-54 car frame, so I would not expect the spring perches to be the same as a 55-57 passenger car housing.

I seem to remember that the Vette bearing/backing plate housing is slightly rotated where the car is square to the pumpkin.

Here is a spare corvette housing that I have. You can see the backing plate mounts are clocked differently than the pumpkin flange. I always intended to put this chrome housing in my corvette but it doesn’t make much sense as mine is lowered and nobody would see it....

1959 was the first year of the traction bar in a Corvette.

@Plowboy called me years ago from the bloomington corvette swap meet and said something like "hey do ya need a bunch of chrome stuff for your vette?" this rear, backing plates, spindles, door hinges, hood latches, motor mounts, driveshaft, steering linkage... the list goes on and on. It was affordabe so I said hell yeah and he got the stuff for me. I have used some of it on my car... I still have a large tub of stuff.....
