  2. I had a visit from that car (and it's owner) just a couple months back. :)

Thanks for the Varni feature, saves me hunting the magazine which would be found at our Walmart 25 miles away.

I liked the Mysterion article, not so much the RB car. Seems like louvers for the sake of louvers. JMTC and not my car.

something for everyone these days. every month it seems there are at least a couple of things worth reading. everyone should subscribe, I think it is less than 10 bucks a year. or we could wonder... why did hot rod go belly up??

Now that there's only one magazine available from TEN, it should be pretty easy to decide which one to subscribe to.

I always try to stick up for Hot Rod. Yea, you might see a Ca**ro or Mus**ng or two, but if you are paying attention, there is plenty of cool stuff also. It never hurts to expand you horizon a bit.

  9. ...just subscribed to Hot Rod for 2 years for $20...I had let it drop, but for 83 cents an issue it's worth the gamble..even if it only has a couple good features an issue.

  10. Here's Michael Christensen's photos of Dennis Varni's Rolling Bones '34 Coupe ... most of which were used in the "The Rake" article in the November 2020 issue of HOT ROD:

Denis Varni has quite a collection, a real car guy.
The Peterson Museum had a virtual “Car Week” because of the Monterey Car Week being cancelled, they featured Mr. Varnis Garage in one episode.

  12. ^^^^ ... and the stuff at Varni’s “Speed Nymph Garage” (i.e., his “warehouse”) is only part of his collection ... Dennis stores many of his other (off topic for the H.A.M.B.) cars at an “undisclosed location”.

Great pics. Anybody know or have an idea what the horizontal extinguisher over the steering column is being used for?

    Any word on Dennis?Great shots.

  15. Kind of ironic him talking about his trip to the "dude ranch" in his Yellowstone bus then talking about putting the parachute on the van incase the brakes fail. o_O

  16. I was totally surprised that they did the Mysterion feature, knew nothing about it beforehand. I found out about it in an email from Mark Gustavson of Model Car Museum fame. They used photos of my car from the Sotheby's auction photo shoot and added a couple vintage photos of the original Mysteion under construction that I am sure have never been published before. The 2019 Street Rodder article did a newer dedicated photo shoot of the car for their article. John Gilbert authored both. I had a little interaction with John before the first article and he seems like a nice guy.

I haven't looked at car mags for months, been totally consumed getting our new home in shape in Texas so picking up this issue of Hot Rod was shocking. Almost could call it Hot Rod pamphlet instead of magazine. Sure looks like it is on life support. With the glaring lack of promotion they use makes you wonder why TEN acquired all the rodding titles just to have them die?

Incidentally that '34 has ALL the right parts!!

And tie wraps on middle carbs, maybe a little over carbed.

The article says the carbs are Stromberg 81’s and at 110 cfm each that’s 440, four 97’s would give 650 cfm. The carbs are set up with only one accelerator pump operating on the front carb and the tie wraps are there to keep the chokes open on the rear carbs.

Good Lord! If that '34 doesn't set the definition of "THE LOOK" nothing does! Lately I've developed a fascination with Rolling Bones cars and this certainly fuels it even more.

    I love their hot rods.

  23. I know you're not allowed to dislike anything the Rolling Bones shop does because they've been anointed by god or something, but I think the Packard grille/nose sucks.

Tomorrow I'm going to put the closest issue I have in an envelope and see what it costs to mail it back to Hot Rod Headquarters.

Interesting juxtaposition between St. Christopher on the shift knob and the skull on the radiator shell. Overall, it's a bit overdone for my tastes and when you have everything built by professionals, do you really have a hot rod?

The RB crew does what they do very well, not my style but I do admire their work. As far as the car not being a hot rod because Dennis Varni didn’t build it is ridiculous. Obviously the man has the wherewithal to own a fleet of impressive vehicles, it doesn’t matter to me what he does to earn money and not just Varni, but no one should be ashamed of knowing their time constraints or limitations.

  30. Just an FYI ... the online version of the "Varni feature" has been available since April 6th 2020:

... and the online version of the "Jeff Jones @willys36 Mysterion feature" has been available since May 8th 2020:
