Here is a link to a very cool roadster homage, by a designer graduate of the Pasadena Art Centre, to the Bentley Embiricos and the French designer Georges Paulin of Pourtout who was executed by the Nazis in 1942. https://www.fantasyjunction.com/sold/1936-bentley-4-¼-litre-roadster-by-chalmers-and-gathings/photos
Monday is Packard Day so I welded up rear quarter and made the cowl side. Screwed it up and perfect fit. Can weld it in once I shape around the windshield post a little more.
My belt line swage is curved. I’d have to fabricate them. If I go that way I’d hide them discreetly in the swage. I’ll probably just use my Lincoln buttons.
Alignment of dash and cowl can begin now. There’s a lot going on where the cowl door and windshield meet. My plan is to screw it up .... figuratively not literally. ... and go away and think about it.
Detail work continues around the cowl and windshield . Also scored a pair of MkX Jag bumpers which have some nice shape to them. Will adapt the 39 Packard overiders to suit.
Work continued yesterday on the sill with the hope of welding the lh side up. The closer I got to being happy with the shape .... the more I realised it needed more compound shape at the lowest point. On and off 20 times. If I’m lucky it will happen today.... after another hour of wheeling.
Will you put a bit of a v in the front bumper to flow with the windshield? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Yes , most likely they will get cut and shut a bit. The plan is to get body under control and then worry about bumpers. But I have them now.
Welding the cowl inserts together pulled the shape out of alignment. So last night with the help of my mate Pete I put my new $200 portapowa to use. Pushed the vent up and sweep of the top and the whole form now flows beautifully.
Another nearly finished section today. Despite being a lazy Sunday I ran out of steam at 3pm. But it will be a good evening hours midweek job to finish it off.
Got a couple of hours in tonight on the parade boot: cleaned up the welds and wheeled it a bit to get it to sit right. It’s close enough for now ( gaps need a tweak) but won’t do anything more on it until I get the doors underway. I’ve always got to consider the bits that aren’t made yet that may affect the bits I’ve made.
This is smart. I have a tendency to want to finish one thing before I move onto the next, and it often comes back to bite me. That said, the boot area on this car looks really good. The shapes all make sense together.
Been super busy with the lead up to Christmas so the Packard has languished a little but I tried to make amends last night ... till Pete arrived with beers and I didn’t manage to weld in the front edge of the flush mount skirt. Previously I had stepped the guard as a whole and it shrunk the leading edge too much .
...and the Darl' Mat was the inspiration for the Bentley.Designed by Georges Paulin and built by Marcel Pourtout on Peugeot chassis for Darl'Mat .A total 53 roadsters,20 coupes, and 32 cabriolets were built.
Here’s another Paulin/Pourtout masterpiece, a Delage D8 120. I was exhausted after a big week but pressed on after work to weld in the fender lip. It completely unified the fender into a rigid form.
Blobbing out over the weekend I got the cowlvent handle and mechanism , and a good wiper mech yesterday morning off a 49 Chevy. Then I remembered that one morning years ago someone left a small pile of Willys parts on the rock wall I was building with a note “thought you could use these”. I remembered a cool badge Aero Ace.... found it mounted on my old tool case. I love the font. Maybe painted body colour and discreetly positioned. The Packard reminds me of a fighter fuselage when I walk in each day. And Packard Aero has a nice ring to it.
Work on the Packard ( my car) has slowed whilst I undertake the restoration of several 53 Eldos. Been rebuilding 4 sets of doors the last few weeks. But I try to do a little on the Packard at least everyday. Even if it is just hunting parts. Found and bought a good potential 320 straight 8 and box for $500. Still have closed borders here so I will decide whether to go 327 or 320 when they both arrive from interstate. Made a lock striker plate for both sides in preparation for door fabrication. Found these pics of what I started with as a reminder of “what a difference a year makes. “
Been a bit of an hiatus whilst I work on other “paying projects”. But enough looking, time to get the doors underway.
Yes it will have windows . Inner and outer door tops are overlapping with enough meat to fold a window edge when I’m a bit further along.
