WEESNER 55 Chevy FROM RYAN’S THREAD

“Super rad, right? Seaweed flames over the shaved body, tube grille, and Buick Wires… Lee Pratt low too… Weesner has a way of painting stuff people want to build and sometimes people actually do it. I wish someone would get busy on this tri-5. It deserves it.”

“Anyway, your turn… What’s your pick? Do some digging.”

    Hello,

Flames are accessories to give to a custom car or hot rod. Some flames are a little too much or do not accent the car. But, some just over power the clean look of the hot rod. But, if the flames are stylish and well done, it gives the final addition of the custom car look that we all expect to see. It just looks..."hot."

These modern flowing flames are the ones we have been playing with for ages. They are different from the crab claw flames of the 50's. The flames drawn on notebooks in school started it all and over the years, have shaped the look of any drawing or model car. Trying to do some flames on a real car is an art. It takes a lot of skill and practice to make it look good. So, kudos to the old-style artists and flame painters of hot rods. It is a well-deserved skill.

Trying to lay out a pattern in real life just takes skill and patience. The fender of my friend’s White, 1957 Chevy Bel air hardtop was the only one that got the treatment from me. But, it came off within 30 minutes. Ha! It looked good on paper, but on a real car, the tape outlining was terrible.

    Weesner:

  10. That magazine cover knocked it out of the park. My favorite photo of the entire feature was the one showing the grill chin with a big ding in it. ;-)

I’ll play. Here’s mine. Needs repainted, as the paint is starting to fail, but I can’t bring myself to do it just yet.

My avatar is my first flamed hot rod, a mint 33 Chevy two-door sedan. I am 14 in the photo and had been driving it for a year. The small town has it's advantages as we had no law enforcement. Some great flame jobs here. It is shown in black and white and the colors were flame red and refrigerator white! Red/white canvas inserts on the top and on the spare tire cover as well.

    Hello,

This is the first and last ¾ rear drawing I did many years ago. It took a long time to get any resemblance of it being a 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. Angle drawing is very difficult for me as the shape and proportions have to be just right. Obviously, I was into surfing and the light blue flames were ocean water/waves influenced. No one is as good as Dave Bell, but everyone tries to emulate the king…

Once my wife and I took our granddaughter to a Roman’s Macaroni Grill Restaurant a long time ago. They were known for hiring waiters and waitresses that could sing some opera tunes and be creative on the white drawing sheet table covers. Instead of having small coloring books for the little toddlers, the whole table was a white drawing paper used as a table cloth. So, the kids…big and small did their things on the table while the dinner orders were being prepared.

Of course, the waitress did her normal triple color crayons trick for all to admire. She wrote her name upside down in cursive without blinking an eye. We were all impressed as to the fluid nature of her penmanship. In triple color handwriting, no less. We all tried our best to do normal handwriting with a single crayon, two colors and finally three colors, but not upside down.

My granddaughter always remembers that I like to draw flames on most everything. So, I drew a huge set of flames going from left to right on the table area in front of me. My granddaughter was being nice and said that was pretty good. The neighbor diners were also impressed that some old guy could draw anything on the table and make it look good. The colors were similar to the silver flames, blue inserts and blue tips of the above drawing. The red background was not as bright, but, as bright as could be using a red crayon.

Flames are hot and they are a good way to let time pass when waiting for something or waiting in a restaurant.
