This is a little off topic but hopefully the mods will allow it. The photo of the man was taken by a Flickr buddy of mine and I thought it would work well with one of my images ........

  7. I've been asked about Corvairs. I did this years ago when several HAMB artists had a friendly little "art challenge" each month. Each had a theme and that month's challenge was "1960's Show Car". My challenge to myself was to
brainstorm something that could have come out of the GM Motorama vault during the transition from the Earl era into the Mitchell years. Zora Arkus-Duntov approved... ( with a hint of Chryslers own Virgil Exner)

    Hello,

Chuck Porter’s Body Shop in Hollywood, CA had a couple of cool looking custom projects back in the early 50s. The 1949 Ford Shop Truck was featured in the Hot Rod Magazine March 1955 issue. A chopped and sectioned truck powered by a Cadillac motor did well at the early So Cal dragstrips. There are very few hot rods that make a splash in the custom car/hot rod world and then also make it big in the drag racing or Bonneville world. These two creations by Chuck Porter did both.

“The street driven truck went on to compete in early organized drag races at Santa Ana and the drag strip at Pomona, setting records in the quickly evolving classes including A/Altered. During a two-year span the radically designed pickup won more than 60 trophies in shows and drag races, solidly placing it among the most recognized vehicles of the era. The Porter’s Body Shop truck is one of the most radical pickups from the early custom era. It’s instantly identifiable by its bright yellow paint and radically chopped, sectioned, channeled, and stretched profile.”

“The Tom Ruddy and Marty Weinstein 1927 Ford Modified Roadster, also built by Porter, is again painted in yellow and has “Chuck Porter’s Body Shop, Hollywood,” proudly painted on the side of the vehicle. The stunning vehicle with a unique aluminum nose is a rear-engine vehicle powered by an Ardun overhead-valve converted flathead Mercury. In 1956, Ruddy achieved a two-way average speed of 200.09 mph earning him membership in the exclusive Bonneville 200 MPH Club. Its best speed came in 1958 at 211.64 mph.”

With the history of the early exploits and now photos that have popped up, we can all see the quality of the ideas and builds coming out of the So Cal hot rod body shop. The recreation of the original truck and roadster is well done and showcases the quality of the original build.

    From Kustomrama:

    upload_2020-9-25_5-4-10.png
“The 1949 Ford f-1 pickup truck owned and restyled by body man, Chuck Porter of Chuck Porter’s Body Shop in Hollywood, California. Chuck chopped the truck 5 inches, sectioned it another 5 inches, before he channeled it down over the frame. In addition to this, the frame was also C’d and the rear springs relocated on the side rails to account for another 7 inches. After chuck had worked his magic, the total height of the truck had decreased by a total of 22 inches.”
