Hemi just describes the shape of the combustion chamber...It was found to be the best for fuel motors because of the flame travel and didn't have as much trouble with detonation as wedges did...

Welch and Stoddard Dayton automobiles of the pre-1912 period also had hemis....

The folks at Mopar did not invent anything new.

Well that sounds absurd... copyright a word that means hemispherical? That would be like copyrighting "phone, fridge, etc" but this can be an absurd world?

The Peugeot TM, TN, XC, XM, and XN fours from 1938 to some time in the '90s were all hemi-head ohv engines:

  9. I think we can probably draw a very definite line in the sand. When we read or hear the word "Hemi", there should be no confusion that the subject is one of the classic, Mopar V8 engines. And I'm positive that I can hear the capital "H" like it is a nebulous neon sign making its way into my brain through my ears.
All others are properly referred to as "hemispherical" engines, lower case "h". But it's just not Kosher to use the "Hemi" label on any of those others.

You might want to look at the combustion chambers of those motors before claiming it is a hemispherical shape.
