Darlington 1955. Smokey Yunick found these tires in a dump in Ohio. Smokey had to buy them all, legend saying it was 100 tires. Bill France asked Smokey to let Kiekhaefer (Chryslers) have some of the tires after Kiekhaefer complained. Smokey told Big Bill that if he was forced to give up some of the tires, Smokey would take the Chevy back to his shop in Daytona. France wanted the new V8 Chevy in NASCAR so Kiekhaefer did not get any tires. After Smokey’s Chevy (the Motoramic Chevy with Herb Thomas [shown] driving) won the race on one set of tires France banned the tires for the next race.
Hey jimmy six, I don't know a whole lot about anything, but I believe the 6 lug truck wheels and other parts appeared in 1957 on the 2 door post back seat less, so called "Black Widow" street cars, which I guess were originally built to be NASCAR eligible.
Great show Mad Men and some cool cars including an episode with So Cal hot rods in it and another with running on the salt flats.
The 61 Ford is not very new, I see a 63 Buick wagon in the back ground and the wheel covers on the convertible look like they are off of a 65 Mustang. But he still has the world by the tail, a smoke, a beer and a ragtop on a sunny day!
