I recently acquired a late '20s steering column and steering box which would turn but only 1/4". After tearing into it I found the bearing on the steering shaft to be more rust than anything. I pulled the side and bottom panels off the box and found everything inside actually in very nice shape. I'm thinking I'll worry about replacing that bearing first and then dive into the box if needed. Any suggestions on where to find the bearing that rides on the steering shaft just above the steering box? I was going to include some pictures but thought I'd wait and see what pictures you suggest. Larry
First thing is to get it out and cleaned up, so you can see what it is...then whether you find it's a common size, or something oddball, will determine where you'll be able to find a replacement. We have no clue what it is....
I thought going to the local NAPA store was a good place to start looking for a replacement bearing but they just looked at me and said what do you want us to do with that? I laughed and said fix it! I will check out the Olcar Bearing Company. Thanks.
Do you have the bearing out? If so, can you take a picture of it? and measure it? If not, get to work....
Just to let you know, the thrust bearing is working wonderfully. Also, the reason the steering shaft wouldn't turn was at some point somebody had the steering box apart and put it back together wrong, go figure. It works great, thanks for your help. Larry
