I shot these photographs of this rare " N " series WACO at the annual grassroots fly in at Brodhead Wisconsin.

A tri-cycle gear Waco. We use to go to the airshows in Merced Calif and there was a yellow one always there. Early 60's. Lippy

Just found and looked thru this thread, very cool! I was a general aviation mechanic since 1968! I worked on or restored a lot of the same model of aircraft in this thread! Went in the Air Force in 68, after basic and tech school I was a crew chief on a Skyraider stationed at Hurlburt AFB in Florida. It was cool to be 20 years old and taxiing a Skyraider with a 3350 cu in engine and 4 ea. 30 cal wing mounted machine guns! When 1970 rolled around I found myself in Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam, working on C7A Caribou aircraft. Came back to the US in Jan. 1971. Stationed at Norton AFB in San Bernardino, Ca. There I was a crew chief on a C141A. Life was sweet. Got out in 72, got my A&P liscense and went to work at the Reading, Pa airport at Nothside Aviation. We worked on anything. There were 2 Staggerwing Beechcraft, Mooney Mite, restored a T28 for Pete Knox and many more. Got older, and married Donna Coyle, my wife to this day! We moved to Montrose, Co and started our own business, Eagle Air Repair. I had my IA and was awarded IA of the year in the western region, that and a few gray hair gave us credibility, we were busy. Definitely miss those days!!! Retired 2 years ago after 50 years of fixing aircraft! Now I am just about finished building our new house and getting back to my deuce coupe!

The DC-3 is still my favorite of all of the classic vintage piston powered aircraft, but when it comes to a very special unique, turbine powered, utility aircraft, the Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter is in a class by itself ! I highly recommend, that if you ever ever get a chance to fly one of these or just go along for a ride as an observer at a sky diving drop zone, its an exhilarating experience that you will never forget ! This is a line drawing I did for the owner of this particular aircraft ( #2011 ) that were made into T-shirts.

We just went through the Curtiss Museum on Monday. If you are ever close it's worth the stop, close to Corning, NY. Most planes have been flown lately.

Have not see that camo before. Great pics.
there used to be a group of WW1 fliers that put on shows. The last show I saw was about 25 yrs ago in Gadsden Al. There was a multitude of planes and dressed to look like the era folks. Last I heard they were in a museum near Guntersville Al. Have not heard since.

Haven't seen Pauls plane since the crash. Oil coolers are beautiful. and expensive.

  17. Love old radial engine aircraft! My friend Larry passed away a couple years ago and left a stagger wing beach behind (you really can't take it with you) that is a beauty to look at. Yes, it's for sale along with some hot rods. Not cheap! IMG_0811.JPG IMG_0811.JPG IMG_0814.JPG

Sorry to hear of the passing of your friend Larry .
Indeed the stagger wing he left behind is a beautiful work of art!
Though they are not cheap, I am confident that somebody with deep pockets will give it a great home ! Only a matter of time till it's sold and being enjoyed again!

  19. The pictures are from a couple of years ago just before he passed. They had just completed a complete engine overhaul along with a prop overhaul, that's why all the covers are off. I think I remember him saying he was into the overhauls for $60K. Makes me appreciate Hot Rods, I don't need to pay an inspector to look over my work although sometimes it might be a good idea? Even basket Stagers are expensive. Round motors are also ,and rebuilders are fewer and fewer.

A friend I knew years ago, Mr. Bill Charney, a retired airline pilot, had a beautiful bright red with black and yellow trim Beechcraft Staggerwing that had the logo on it, " The Red Rockette " his daughter at the time was one of the Radio City Music Hall's, Rockette dancers. He had me do some artwork to make T-shirts of his plane. This is one of the line drawings I did. This plane was also on a calendar of him piloting it over Lake Tahoe.

As you can see, this amount of weight on such a small hard rubber " tire / wheel " on a hot day at Oshkosh on the tarmac, sinks in slightly.

That plane is extremely heavy. Was called a Spad in Vietnam. Carried tons of ordnance.

But they could hang around, unlike the F-4s who made one pass then had to go refuel.

    That's why they were used.
