Technical BOLT CIRCLE TEMPLATE

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Sep 18, 2020.

  1. Recently Ryan posted a thread , "Tools & what not" allowing us to discuss the use of tools pertinent to the building & maintenance of our Hot Rods & Customs.

I guess this item falls in the category of the what not , but it is a handy item to have when looking for wheels while roaming the salvage yards or swap meets.

Do you have one in your tool box? HRP

Yep it's kinda like a wheelbarrow. Don't use it much, but it's good to have it when I do need it.

.......and the tape measure can be used for a lot of other things so you don't have unnecessary stuff.

There....finished your sentence. Hope you don't mind.

I've got one or more of the plastic ones that a dude who sells cheap tools at the local swap meets always has a supply of, one similar to 1oldtimer showed in post 9 and an aluminum one about 3/16 thick that will slip in the hip pocket of a pair of jeans. It's buried in my stuff in the garage waiting for me to garage cleanup and rescue it. Old photo of that one. .Their site doesn't show them anymore. IWE bolt circle gauge (2).jpg

  19. Like squirrel said, I have never seen the need for one, a tape measure works just fine.

Truthfully you don't think you need one until you actually use one. When you are digging though a 50 yard long stack of wheels looking for specific wheels that one showed in post 9 is golden. Pretty well a go/no go gauge wheel wise. Friend of mine has all of his old wheels with tires still on them piled against the fences in his yard to keep individuals from busting though the corrugated tin fences. Being able to reach over one handed and go YUP/NOPE using that gauge is golden. Helps to beat hell at yard sales or swap meets too.

been a long time since I've had to search a stack of wheels....I expect it might come in handy for that. Well, the one with the pegs, that is.

The other end is for fitting over lug nuts when checking the sizes when mounted on cars.

Measuring tape is the best device.
Not only is it important to measure pattern, but width, register bore, and backspacing on EVERY wheel.

Got one bud thought he scored some cheap weld wheels for drag racing his late model Mustang.
5x4.5" BP was correct, register bore was for an 80's Ranger. ~2.5", he needed ~2.8" OOMPF.

Back in HS one kid was stoked at getting a deal on CL for some Chevy Rallyes. Came to school the next day hopping mad. Two of the wheels were 15" with tires, the seller showed him the two bare rims were '15' by measuring across the lip. Wouldn't have been too much of a loss but he had just swapped to disc brakes and needed 15" for the front.

I myself nearly got burned by snagging a 'set' of Poncho rallyes at the yard. Sure enough one was only 6" and not 7". Dug around the yarde for another 30mins looking for the last one. Nice thing is the 6" fits the spare well, 7" won't ;)

My 1934 Austin Ruby has three hole wheels. Good thing I still have a good grasp of high school trigonometry.

  27. Granted, a tape measure will do the job, but I prefer this handy template when scouring piles of wheels at a swap meet or a salvage yard. HRP
