History When and who cast the first after market Aluminum Single Four Barrel Intakes Small Block Chevy?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Robert J. Palmer, Sep 15, 2020.

  1. My fault, I didn't think about the Flathead 4bbl intake.

I was asking about the Small Block Chevy.

Does anyone know when the first aftermarket single four aluminum intakes came to market?
Who was the first to produce them?

    Thank-You,
    Robert J. Palmer

I think there are a few block letter Edelbrock 4 barrel intakes for 8BA's. Then they changed the logo to the script and the block letter stuff is rare. Would probably have happened in 1949.

So far as I know, first cars with 4 barrel carbs were 1952. Some Buick straight eights had them. So did Cadillac and Olds V8s. Aftermarket manifolds may have been made as early as 52 or 53. There should be advertisements that would give a date they were first offered.

1952 sounds better to me. I thought 4-barrel manifolds for the flathead were late to the table. Most everyone used 2-3-4 97s.

I’d guess the day after Vic Edelbrock saw his first four barrel carb.

By 1955 they were optional on nearly all cars, even Ford, Chevy and Plymouth. By that time the real hot performers were using 2 4 barrels or 3 2s.

The first four-barrel carburetors were the Carter WCFB and identical Rochester 4GC simultaneously introduced on the 1952 Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles and Buicks. Oldsmobile referred the new carburetor as the “Quadri-Jet” while Buick called it the “Airpower”.

The first aftermarket 4-barrel intake was probably the Edelbrock QUAD-JET flathead intake in 1953.

Thanks for the Edelbrock catalog photo @moparboy440

I believe the early Rochesters were referred to as "4Jets", not “Quadri-Jet”. The later, large secondary Rochester 4 bbls were called "Quadrajet". Also, I believe that the very early Buicks used a Stromberg 4 bbl called an "Aeroquad". In addition, while Rochester 4G's and Carter WCFB's were sometimes used in the same application, they are in no way "identical". I have rebuilt both, and would not recommend trying to put a WCFB kit into a Rochester.

I personally have owned flathead Ford 4 bbl manifolds made by Edelbrock, Offenhauser, Fenton, Sharp, and Edmunds.

IIRC Edelbrock introduced the C4B in late '64-early '65 and that would be the first aftermarket aluminum 4 bbl manifold for the SBC. It must have been in 1967 that the Holley 3 barrel was introduced and the Edelbrock C3B was announced at the same time. Most guys ran Carter AFB's at that time but Holley popularity skyrocketed when the C4B came on the scene.

Obscure original brochures. I doubt that even a minor portion of current enthusiasts would recognize these nomenclatures.

And the '52-'54 Buick carburetors WERE Strombergs.

They may be old and primitive but I use 2 1953 Oldsmobile Carter WCFBs on my dual quad Y - Block. It’s a 57 intake but there were some available in late 1954.
Like I said any of the manufacturers could do it but they needed the 4 barrel carb first. I’ve seen twin Holley 4000 teapots on a flathead here on the HAMB.

Wow. You learn something every day. The few Buick 4 bbls I have seen were all Strombergs and I have never heard of them referred to as anything but "Aeroquads".

You sure must have a nice collection of automobile literature!:)

I don’t think the actual question was answered.

Who made the first “aftermarket” SBC aluminum 4 barrel intake manifold?
