Hot Rods Advanced Design Chevy (47-55) picture thread

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4ever17, Sep 15, 2020.

  1. A couple months ago I picked up a 51 Chevy five window pick up with plans for a full redo at some point soon. Please share pics you may have of any 47-55 Chevy pick up for inspiration.

Here is a couple of mine to start off the thread and show you what my starting point is.

I've always admired those trucks but found the cab to be pretty tight for a big guy.

Nice Pick-up. My first vehicle in HS. I know it's personal but a chrome grille and factory rear bumper would bring back a ton of memories for me. My dad and I in put a 55 Olds 324 in mine from an Olds that was just totaled with a rebuilt engine. I should have kept that one and finished the interior like yours..

Judging from your website I guess you will do major mods to that old girl, FWIW, I believe the truck has the bumpers reversed ...the back is the front bumper the rear is the front.

Here is the 54 (47-53 front clip) I recently finished. Well not really, have an AC leak that I think is at the evaporator under the dash but not going to deal with that until winter. But finished enough to drive! Love the AD trucks. IMG_0319.jpg

This is mine. I painted it when I was 15 years old. Drove it daily through high school. Now it comes out on nice days. It was a farm truck from the day it was new and now it’s retired back on the farm. 1950 3100, 216, 3speed, according to the man we bought it from, it’s never had the head off. It was purchased new in Eastern Iowa by one of Dad’s boyhood friend’s father in law. Dad and I have owed it since 1985.

  11. Looking at it now I see that you may very well be right about the bumpers! I hadn't really noticed it, but yes they look as though they are reversed. I LOVE these trucks and have always wanted one. I will blow it apart for a full redo/build. But frankly while I love them when customized and chopped etc, I also think they look good just cleaned up and pretty mostly stock appearing.
My plan is complete drivetrain updates, leave the body mostly stock and then a full new interior.

  12. I LOVE your truck!! What fuel injection is that with the side mount for the throttle body? Never seen that on what looks to be a Ramjet. Funny thing about your truck, is when I was about 13-14 I went with my dad to a small car show. A friend of his rolled in with a 50 Chevy pickup with a mild chop, painted black with traditional flames. That truck is what sparked my love of the 47-55 Chevy pickup. At 51 I am now finally getting my own.

Hi. WOW, you got a good one to start with and are really ahead of the game to start with. Back in the early 60's I had a 53 GMC 5 window 1/2 ton. Do not have any photo's of it though. My avatar pick here shows the tricked out 235 I have in my 46 Chevy Stylemaster Coupe. Bored 0.060, hot cam, dual 2 bbl Webers on Clifford intake, headers, HEI, & 12 volt system. Great daily driver and would run with the traffic at today's speeds before it got rear ended by a distracted texter. Hopefully The rebuild will be next year.
Keep us posted with your build.

  21. The story is actually pretty cool.

Back in 2006 when I bought my house and moved to the town I had a 47 Ford hot rod. One day the mailman came up the driveway with a package and told me of an older pickup down the street and around the corner that I would love. So of course a week later I went for a ride, and low and behold there sat this truck outside in the old timers driveway. Just sitting. About a year later I stopped again and knocked on the door, chatted up the old guy and he said he wasn't ready to sell. Not that he was going to redo it like we all hear, just that he wasn't ready. I just think he hadn't come to terms with the fact that he had a one car garage and wasn't capable any more. Every couple years I would stop and chat him up always with the same story, not ready. This past June I was out for a ride in my 55 Belair and decided to stop again. When he came out I just asked if he had given any more thought of selling the truck. He replied, "It's for sale!" Words he had never spoken before. He gave me a price that I was comfortable with and handed him a deposit. I was afraid that after al these years if I tried to talk him down he would have backed away. So I just paid the man. I'm 100% confident that I could sell it today for more than what I paid, but I didn't steel it. It took me 13 years to get the truck, persistence paid off.

  26. I don't know why, because Advanced Design seems right, but it's actually Advance Design.

  27. Converted my '53 to a 'factory' king cab. Wanted to make it look like a period original. tricked out late model 235 (Clifford intake and cam), shaved the head 1/10", split Fenton headers, Holley 390 4bbl, aluminum lifter cover and valve cover, Chrysler electronic ignition guts inside '53 distributor, 200R4 tranny, Old Air AC, added full flow oil filter, VW 2spd electric wipers, GM tilt column w/ '53 steering wheel and shift arm adapted, Buick power split bench front seat, Ford power window riser motors adapted to '53 mechanisms. Previous owner had already put in an open driveline rear end. Installed a Toyota Land Cruiser power steering gear. Adapted a late model Chevy big gastank under the bed.

Lengthened the body 2' using a second body, lengthened the frame 1', shortened the bed 1', lengthened the running boards 2'. Frenched the headlights and cut '59 Caddy tail lights into the rear fenders. Also added a center tailgate latch from a compact pickup. Made a full headliner from fiberglass formed on the cab roof.

Floor of the bed is Ipe iron wood with stainless bed strips.

One I started building for a guy about14 years ago. Chop 2 1/2 inches . cab is extended 9 inches with quarter windows fabricated from window frames from extra doors. Started out as a 3/4 ton with long bed . Put a 6 foot box on it and that is were the 9 inch addition to the cab came into play. Then he ran out of money and took it home. It never got finished. To bad I thought it was turning out pretty cool. Forgive the off topic shots of my Merc below, Only file photos I have of truck. Larry
