Hot Rods Low Mileage Cars

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by threewindaguy, Nov 2, 2019.

  1. There's a 62 deuce sitting in the driveway with 25k original, not my speed but the guy wanted it redone until i priced the job lol. If he doesn't come get it soon it'll be cheap!

  2. I would prefer a car that had been used and maintained as necessary to one that proclaims low milage and hides rot. 100 200k who cares as long as it is solid.

The 53 Catalina in my profile pic just turned 44k miles, about 1300 by me in the last 15 months.
Before that it was last on the road in 1989. My Dad was the second owner, he bought it in 1978 with 39k on it, it came with all the dealer maintenance records from the old lady that owned it, pretty much proving the mileage was original. Pretty strong evidence from the condition it was original as well.
As a few of you guys have said, it was a ton of work to get it re-commissioned and road-worthy again.
New fuel tank, pump, all lines, new gaskets in an NOS carb, coil and condenser, battery and cables, all fluids and then it was running ok but smoking quite a bit. Then all new brakes: new wheel cylinders, hard and flex lines, MC, new shoes and hardware and turned drums, lots of adjusting, then it would stop. Messing with some wiring and grounds to get most of it working, then I could actually go up and down the street which revealed the next round of projects required; all new exhaust system, new rear springs and bushings, 4 new shocks, all new bushings in the front end, new u-joints, and a bunch of other small stuff I can't remember. After putting a couple hundred miles on it the smoke cleared up and I find now the more I drive it the better it runs. I drove it out to western Ct to Lime Rock this past Labor day (about 150 miles each way) for the vintage racing weekend (as a spectator of course); it drove great and I was amazed how much gear I could fit in the trunk! Much more than my MG. The vacuum wipers actually came back to life and started working pretty well on the ride home in torrential down-pours, didn't need the rain-ex after all!
I still need to install the rebuilt radiator, all new hoses and belts and a new headlight switch so the dash lights will work, and new front springs (a lot of sag on driver's side) while I'm at it I'll cut a coil off to lower it an inch or so since I put 1" blocks in the rear when I replaced the springs. dash.JPG IMG_0120.JPG odo.JPG rear.JPG

There is a 36 ford 4 door sedan near New Orleans for
sale with 18,000 on the odometer. It appears unrestored
original. Running driving vehicle. Not mint, but not junk. The owner is asking 16,500. I looked at and did
ride in it. Just not for me.

When I was a kid back in the late 1970's, someone in town made the front page of the local paper with their OT 1969 Firebird because it had just turned 100,000 miles... that was simply unheard of in those days!

It spent most of its life in a chicken coupe in Pennsylvania, so not much of the original vehicle is there.

I already posted these pictures on my instagram but heres my 29 roadster. I have the original bill of sale. Original female owner traded in a model T when she purchased this as a leftover in 1930. Car spent its life in one small town in Maine and was registered until 1964. She drove it with the accelerator and timing levers and didnt use the gas pedal. The pedals have little wear and the car has just over 15,300 miles. Its a time capsule.

I got my 62 Impala in early 1997 , it was a 1st owner Arizona car. When I got it home it had 15600 miles on the clock . There was not a single rust spot anywhere, but the paint was dull in a few places, so I decided to blow it apart and take it down to bare matel and have it repainted. Today I could kick myself for being so stupid and I ´d just leave it alone and be proud of the factory paint. The dash, carpet, seatcovers, etc is still factory. I only removed the glass, trim, doors, fenders, hood and trunk lid.The firewall is still factory paint, and so are the frame and floorboards. Today the odo reads 24400 miles

My friend Jay´s friend John bought this 40 from the MGM studios in Hollywood in the late 60s. The title in Johns name read 18600 miles. I wasn´t driven much since, I got it with just under 21000 miles on it. It still has it´s beautiful original interior, mostly original paint and remains of the factory weatherstripping is just sticky gunk in the door jambs, hahaha. It is desperately in need of new glass seals as it leaks like a sieve. But other than that I´ll just drive it.
