I'm running 710 x 15 now on my A pickup, and the tread is getting a little thin. I've been doing a lot of looking and online shopping for tires. I have to say, I do like the look with the Firestone bias tires, I'd just like a little more tire in back, mainly for looks. The wheels and tires were on the car when I got it, and according to my best guestimate the wheels are probably 15 x 5; hard to tell with the tires mounted, but eyeballing the width of tire vs the wheel that's my best guess. Coker tire says wheel width for the 820-15 should be 6" - 6.5", I'm wondering if I could get by with my wheels? If I have to buy a wider wheel, then I may just go a completely different route with it, maybe some torque thrusts instead, or some other mag wheels. If the 820's would fit OK, that would be the easiest and cheapest thing, and would save me the agony of trying to choose different wheel/tire packages.
@Blues4U .....given that running 7.50 16 on 4”/4.5” wheels is commonplace on the HAMB, i don’t think you are treading on virgin territory. Now, to be clear, I do not think the 7.50 tire thing is ‘desirable’, but it IS being done. So, i see nothing inconsistent with what you want to do with 8.20’s. Come to think of it, back in the day I used 7.60 or bigger on 5” wheels on my ‘50 Ford and ‘got away with it’ ... Keep in mind, IMO, with that cross section and relatively narrow wheel, lower tire pressure would be indicated to match tire contact patch with the load being carried. Ray
I have a customer running 8.90s on a 4" wheel. Has not crashed yet. I plan on re-hooping those to 6-1/2" soon, though.
When I built my Model A coupe (in my avatar) I had 15X5" steel wheels all the way around and I had 8.20 Firestone wide whites on the back. I bought all four wheels & tires from Coker and they came mounted and balanced. I had no problem with them for the several years I ran them, and I only changed to the American mags and Radir slicks for a different look. At first I ran 6.70 Firestone wide whites on the front, but the 6.70's didn't provide enough contrast in outside diameter tot he 8.20's so I ended up running Firestone 5.60's on the front instead and sold the 6.70's.
Yep.... I would prefer a wider rim, as per recommendations, but don’t have any issues at this point. A wider rim may give better tread placement on the tarmac, and better handling etc, but I don’t have anything to compare it with.
I put original 10x15 recap Inglewood racing slicks on original 6" Radir wheels on my Mysterion clone like Ed Roth did. Gives those great flat sidewalls.
Had a similar situation with my teardrop trailer. I built it with two aluminum space saver spares since I really liked the looks of those wheels. Unfortunately my toe- in is way off and I didn't want to spend money on new tires until I corrected that. The skinniest used tires I found were 195--65 15 and no problem.
