Folks Of Interest Early Stewart Warner gauge thread

I am going to venture a guess that this is truck related and is the air pressure for the brake system.

 

Love them old gauges but found this odd one and it looks like a 1933 1934 and is the same size as well. Any ideas whats it from... its Cooper Stewart and was that a division of SW

Here's a tach for you, but no enough revs to keep up with your machines.

 

RPM x 100 I understand. What is 2 x 1 mean?

2x1 means it's driven off the cam. 1x1 would have been driven off the crank.

@fleetside66 that is cool and will be running a stock flathead so don’t need to many rpm with the high Horsepower and torque of it . What size is it and does it have convexed glass

 

The Cooper Stewart speedometer is from an English Ford Popular or as it was better known in the USA ,... Anglia . I think from memory the E93A Prefect had an AC speedometer.

 

You can still use either ratio tach head with either drive location. It's very common for the angle drives to have a conversion ratio gear set in them. Most of the old ones are .500.

 

Here's a 1930's Stewart Warner 8,000 tach I picked up a while back. I like how the numbers are completely written out. Great old school look.

 

fleetside66 The JD Weidenhoff gauge shown above was factory installed in tractor & aircraft test benches in the 40's. Weidenfoff was bought out by Snap On. It can be spun either clockwise or counter clockwise. Greg

My ancient SW tach converted to modern solid state guts from a cheapie swap meet tach with similar 270 degree sweep. Works great.

I was able to find a great Stewart Warner small logo vacuum gauge with the brass casing. It's a pretty sharp looking gauge.

 

Trying to complete another set of SW Tulip gauges, I was so lucky to get the Temp gauge on the HAMB classifieds ad. I also need to find the hardest gauge to find "FUEL" gauge and a nice panel to mount them all. Anyone have a affordable fuel gauge : (

 

Al, the oil temp & the fuel pressure are buggers to find, too. I'd sell you the fuel, but I don't want to break up the set. Note that the oil temp is the same as the water temp except for one word.

 

I have never seen the fuel pressure gauge, I never knew they existed, wow. Thank you though @fleetside66 I'm hoping to get lucky and buy the fuel gauge, I'm in no rush to be honest, this would be my second set if I complete it.

 

I pulled this out of a FWD mid 50's truck . Small gauges are SW .
I'm wondering was this a kit SW sold to manufacturing companies to put into their trucks . The steel dash was made for the gauge cluster

 

That and other SW panels were used in quite a few places; the Elgin sweepers we sold used the Ensign panel up into the early '60s; they were used in a couple of the Walters trucks we sold, and I have also seen them used on aux engine panels. There is an Ensign panel in the wheelhouse of the tugboat on the roof of the science museum in town, upside down tho. I use to always check out the old plow and blower trucks at the junkyards; neat panels, gauges, lights, and whatnot.

picked these up at a swap meet recently . looks like it was originally a box of 6 . still 2 in it

 

also picked this up clock with THE GEO BORG CORP CHICAGO US. has brass rim and back cover. I am thinking it is old automotive any ideas about what it was in

Here is another N.O.S. gauge of mine date coded 1959. It's a 2 5/8" crescent needle, curved glass, smooth bezel. It has the SW Inspection stamp and stewart warner script on the rear case.

Today I pulled this out of its sealed package from the Stewart Warner factory. Prior to today this gauge has not see the light of day or been touched by another human in 61 years.....pretty cool!

 

That's pretty amazing, T.J. You're lucky it was 1950's air that you inhaled & not 1960's, or we'd have to call the authorities. If the elements are kept at bay, it's a wonder to see the originality. Here are some mid 1950's Stewart-Warner Wings "Utility" gauges that keep their young looks simply because there is no way for contaminated air to get under the glass. There are no side light windows to move or crack & there is no hole in the back for a socket & bulb.

 

It wouldn't be the first time someone called the authorities on me Wow Greg, those are pretty rare Utility gauges! Other than your collection I don't know if I recall seeing a Utility/Wing series gauge. You often have the rare cool stuff.

The closest I have to those are the standard Utility gauges and were still Made In USA (after which they were made south of the border)

Greg makes a great point. For those of you taking notes these are completely sealed gauges, as in no light bulb port or light window on the side of the case. Often times there is minimal to no clouding on the glass or particulates behind the glass. Having @fleetside66 here on the HAMB is such a great benefit to us all. His historical knowledge in vintage gauges is priceless!
