in the 80's i put a volvo trans on the back of a datsun 240z motor. to do this i layed the bell housings flat on the work bench, shimmed up to height with plywood, then clamped a sawzall into the vise and rotated the bell to make the cut. once i had both bells cut, i bolted them in place, straddled over the top and wiggled them around until it felt like it was centered in line with the pilot bearing, and my friend with the fancy tig welder tacked it while i held it in place. crude as it was, i drove it many thousands of miles, and my friend still drives it today. sometimes a little luck helps too

  2. Can you PM me any details and pictures you may have?

I knew an old timer who made several trans adapters in the fifties. His technique was simple, he would stand the engine on its nose, set the clutch and trans in place, push the trans all the way to the left, mark it, all the way to the right, mark it, all the way forward and all the way back. Then center it by eye to the scribe marks and mark the center of the bolt holes with a punch. Drill the holes on his drill press and there you are.
Sometimes it was possible to redrill the bellhousing, sometimes he cut a plate of steel or aluminum.

"info on T5 adapters, a good condensation of the huge amount of info in the T5 thread:"
    etc.
"Now, this IS NOT to be ANOTHER T5 thread, there is already a great lengthy thread here, plus others. So don't bother with that."

    I'm confused.

It's a pointer to the T5 threads so this one does not get cluttered up with repeats of information already on those threads. I mean for this thread to have information about other engine/trans combinations. And I deleted the post that confused you so much. Happy?

I just watched the first of those adapter videos, the guy was pretty clever and I was impressed that he mentioned checking it at the end with a dial indicator.
Plus it has a relaxing, soothing sound track.

Rocky, what flywheel and clutch were you using? I would like to do this also

  24. Never got that far. When I found the damaged cylinder wall I stopped collecting parts for it. I believe an aftermarket company makes a flywheel for the 500 but not sure who it is.

I've always wondered why there wasn't something like around somewhere. In the
Harley world there was a booklet published back in the 70's and 80's called, strangely enough, "What Fits What" . It had pretty comprehensive info on mixing and matching H-D parts from the 30's thru the early 80's.
I know an automotive version would be WAY bigger due to the vast array of parts, options, and models, and year ranges but really, people spend years writing about a specific car I'd think the knowledge would be worth a lot of money if it was gathered together in a single source (or a series for that matter).

Yes it required shaving the bell-housing, so not a bolt in affair
