^^ No matter how many car wash scenes you can post there only one true scene..The one from "Cool Hand Luke"^^
Gee lets see. It only took Corvette 57 more years to hit the same benchmark that Corvairs did in 10 years. Hum. To say Corvairs were not POPULAR during the production run is inaccurate. Popular then and popular now are two different things. The Corvair was quite POPULAR with consumers during its production run. The first generation cars had quite good sale numbers. Second generation sales started dropping off after 1965. The diminishing sales numbers were due largely to more models in the same class and price range becoming available such as the Falcon, ChevyII, Valiant etc. The Mustang popularity probably put the final nail in the coffin. Nader probably had some affect on sales also. Corvairs were not some POS cheep car that any one could buy, as some on here have said. The prices were pretty much in line with other cars in its class. So I guess some must think the ChevyIIs, Falcons and Mustangs or any other cars produced in its class and price range, must be POSs too. The reason that Chevy ended production was not due to it being a poor design POS. It was due to the diminishing sales numbers and the high cost of production compared to producing more conventional like cars, in the same class for less cost and make more profit per unit. I dont think the other post comparing Corvair to Corvette production numbers was meant to say the Corvair is more popular than Corvette, but to show perspective of how the Corvair production numbers compared to something other folks can relate to. Corvairs and Corvettes are totally different cars, different class, different price range and not comparable. Bill
True. Ford had do to something fast to compete with Corvair sales, and their solution was brilliant. They took a totally conventional car with a front engine and solid axle layout that everyone was comfortable with , the Falcon, and just put a new body on it. The '64 1/2 Mustang. Same size sporty body, mechanically conventional .
jimmy six I stand with you 110%. Sadly we are a small group that are aware and understand that. I never ever use that short form commonly used by "Johnny come latelys" and gold chainers awkwardly trying to be cool when speaking of Corvettes. I remember this as if it was yesterday. Back in 1974 someone older and wiser set a small group of Corvette enthusiasts straight. He made it clear this "rule" is written in stone. It made sense and it stuck. As it was I had never used that garish short form prior to that because I was uncomfortable with it. He explained, and this is not meant to be insult, but is humor meant to get our attention and make the point. A vet is an animal health care professional frequently found with their arm up a cows rectum. Having our attention he said on the serious side a Vet is actually a short form appellation to be used with respect and reverence and thanks when referring to a Veteran. Unfortunately this belief seems to be lost in the fog of time. Whenever I have recounted this understanding of the name I have been met with expressions like that of a a deer in headlights. Happy Trails
I don’t know if Smokey ever messed with nailhead Buick’s but if he had I think the engine would have been laid out a bit neater. The M-1 Buick was driven by Fireball Roberts and Red Vogt was the builder. Yes, the car was torn down and eventually ruled illegal for “altered pushrods”. Vogt used .030 head gaskets from the Dynaflow engine to raise the compression and with no adjustable rockers he shortened the pushrods to maintain valve train geometry. I think the fix was in, Bill France wanted Kiekhaefer’s (sp?) hemi Chrysler to win so the p/r’s were declared illegal. Looks like Smokey wasn’t the only one with tricks up his sleeve BITD.
As for the Corvair vs Corvette. I've worked on both. I would rather work on a Corvair any day of the week. I also fit inside a Corvair better than a Vette.
Thanks Tony, Didn't know that or that she was a Cadillac girl but figures as all class and dirty white walls maybe suggest a bit of the other side of character. Like your comment.
