    WARNING: Rant ahead...
1.0.jpg I'm really starting to hate hearing "My, you are talented" An incident happened this week that got me thinking...and that's never good:eek:

I know when someone says " you're so talented" it is usually meant as a compliment and I most often take it that way. But, in the back of my mind it sometime feels like they are saying "I wish I could draw like that, but I wasn't born with that "gift" or "talent".

WHAT? Wait a minute...There's some "magical gift" we were BORN with...called talent? BULLSHIT !!!!

The reason I can draw and they can't is because I have spent THOUSANDS of hours and many years working on my skills...and they didn't.

I don't think "Talent" even exists...I think it's confused with DESIRE, PERSIVIERENCE and PRACTICE...which is what it takes to excel at ANYTHING...referring to that as "Talent" throws ALL that time, work and energy trying to improve your skills out of the window, and makes it sound like it was just a "gift" that was handed to you.

"Talent" or "lack of talent" is just an excuse a lot of people use to make themselves feel better because they think they didn't get our so called "special magical gift"...not because they, in reality, just didn't put any effort in to learning how to do it.

    Rant over.;)

Jack...I have to say that most kids draw and I was no different but as time went on I really enjoyed drawing and by my early Teens I was drawing at a level that was pretty advanced to my peers and that included admiration of the Art in the Mags like Streetrodder that you were penning in already...How cool is that! Then there's Jackson Pollock of course...

I freelance today but never had a career in it...I did work at it and still do, honing what I believe was in the DNA given to me through the coupling of Mom and Dad on a Very Special Day...:D

My Dad did not draw but his Signature was very Artistic (clue)...;) and I have only one niece in the Extended Family that has a very good handle on Drawing...

There is no question I owe some of my ability to all the education I received over the years some of that Post Secondary Art Courses...

I think it's better to accept compliments as mediocre or poorly put across they may be as the Gift in How and What to say to anyone regardless of subject is an Art in Itself...One of my Bosses I had years ago said to me of the work I was doing in leaving for the Day...He said 'Steve You Do Good Stuff'...I do try my best everyday...

Glad you're around...sharing what you worked very hard at to achieve...and This weeks Anniversary Poster rocks...Have you done any newer Hotrod Artwork since I suspect retiring from the Zine Scene?...You know the Old saying things get better with age...

The Digital work I do now is I believe some of the Best Automotive creations that I have mustered to date and I have none other than all you Hoodlums to thank for that...Thank You All...;)

    Okay back to Art...:)

1958-59 Lions Reath Sedan vs Herman Bros Olds powered roadster

    Hello,

These two drag racing competitors were always going against each other at Lions in those early days. They were two of the top Altered/Modified Roadster competition cars that we saw every week. The white, Reath Automotive Altered Sedan vs the hot, Modified Roadster of the Herman Brothers was always a race to see and enjoy. The builds were outstanding and so were the performances. One of the things that stood out from our seats in the Lion’s spectator side bleachers was the bright red logo of the Mr. Horsepower, Woodpecker sign on the side of the blue roadster.

Clay Smith engineering was located at 1301 W. Gaylord Street in Long Beach. It was a half mile away from our Westside of Long Beach house.

The Hermann Brothers Olds powered roadster at Lions in 1960, ran with the best of them. They raced against all types of competition. They were part of the Itow's Automotive/Clay Smith Engineering sponsored racers that we used to see at Lion's Dragstrip almost every week.

But, what if they put in a Potvin 671 blower, altered the chassis and running gears and went to Bonneville? Fast and sleek…

  24. Talent exists. I partake of two art realms. Graphic arts, and music.
I have a fairly sure line and tone, and a confident colour sense. I feel a deliberate ease with a piece of paper, or a canvas, before me.
However, with music, I often feel concern with the impending, non- negotiable need to respond with the proper note, at the proper time.

I master the blank canvas. Whereas the music sheet tends to master me.

A lot of this is hard work and application, but relative talent is the central driver of my differing responses.
