History THE GREEN CROSS FOR SAFETY STICKER

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Sep 3, 2020.

  1. I was watching the video about the Bob McGee roadster and saw where the hot rod clubs, the SCTA & Hot Rod magazine were working on trying improving the image of hot rodders in the 40's & 50's along with law enforcement and promoted the Green Cross for Safety window sticker, the McGee roadster was the first to receive the sticker.

Photo of Wally Parks putting the sticker on the McGee roadster.

I guess I was completely oblivious to the existence of this piece of Hot Rod history. HRP

All I ever see of the green cross is at the local marijuana stores around here!

Me three. Iconic photo, seen it many times, didn’t know what he was doing.

Wonder when (or if) this program was dropped or fell out of favor?

  6. I did a quick search and have found practically nothing, I was hoping someone here may have a older family member that knew something about the organization, I suppose it may have been short lived but obviously they did have some impact on the youth of the day and getting the involved in doing their racing at organized events and cleaning up all the street racing. Perhaps someone deemed the rodders were all healed? Wonder if the Safety Safari replace it?

As seen on the inside cover of the owner’s manual from an OT vehicle. A 1966 John Deere 110 round fender. Still mow the lawn with that thing for over 50 years.

  11. John, I purchased the car from a retired pharmacist and the car did have a green cross very similar to the one I posted but I sold the car and I don't have a photo of the sticker. HRP

  13. Wasn't the green cross also used in industry for safety sign?

  15. Odd that there is so little information on the organization, I wonder if it was just active on the West Coast. HRP
