Probably not as much as you thought: Add for carb, flywheel distributor.
The customer kept the oem iron water pump assembly but opted for the alum intake.

You sure that scales reading pounds and not kilograms?:)

Love the guesstimates. I wonder if that's with/without a factory iron intake or a flywheel?

  8. I had to see what that would be in lbs.

On a side note, I’ve been told a Cadillac 500 weighs 625 lbs.

Here is mine at 645 lbs. Not stock, it has weight saving aluminum heads and intake, no water pump, no exhaust, but extra weight with the 8 carbs and the 8 counterweight billet stroker crank. hemi weight.jpg hemi weight.jpg hemi on scale rear.jpg

Feels like 500 of those lbs are in the heads when you need to remove them :)

The figure I remember from years (decades) ago, published in Hot Rod Magazine’s specialty book, “The Complete Book On Engine Swapping” *.....was 765 lbs fully dressed. You could shave lots of pounds by using an aluminum intake and various other weight saving mods.

    * may be exactly correct....or a close approximation, but close enough to search for one if you are looking.

Dodge hemis were about 645 lbs or so, and Desoto sort of split the difference. In 1961 at the ripe old age of 17, I pulled a 331/M6 semi-auto from a ‘51 New Yorker and installed the combo in my ‘53 Plymouth Convertible. In hindsight, kinda amateurish, but that’s what I was then, and am now, but I did get it running and driving. Several ‘concessions’ made it impractical to operate regularly, so I yanked the hemi and reinstalled the flatty six. But I did learn a lot from the exercise. ........oh, my point in relating this story is....that was one heavy sumbitch!

I assume that 392 Hemis only came in Chrysler and Imperial as Dodge had the Red Ram, DeSoto had their version and Plymouth only had Polys. Were Chrysler and Imperial automatic only and if so then Flywheel weight would not be counted in the engine weight?

Just so we can get a comparison - how much does a flathead, a small block, an Olds (331) and a nailhead weigh?

Or do we need a new thread listing all the popular hot rod engines, and their respective dimensions and weight?

Wonder what a similarly equipped flathead with Ardun heads weighs compared to the Hemi?

Changing the water pump to a chevy and using the aluminum intake takes well over 100 lbs off the engine bring the weight close to the RB Chrysler engines.

It's not clear if these are short- or tall-deck variants, or what level of dress these weights are for.

The article also mentions that during the fuel ban, blown Chevys were around 800lbs while the blown Chryslers were around 1300. Must have been before Donovan and Hot Heads came around...

Interesting that the 'charts' all show an additional 100lbs or more.
I 'spose that the iron intake, generator and torque converter would equal that.

The Cad 500 was mentioned by wraymen; I have 2 in the shop and they do tip the scale right at 625.

  25. More than a little, less than a lot I reckon.

The same guys that pull the hemi's heads (while still in the car) could get .....equal "Hemi-rrhoids" pulling the intake off a stock Ford FE engine. Holy-moly!

My 354 came with a cast iron transmission and fell through the plywood deck on my trailer, wonder what that total weight was. Bob
