Helpful HTML Hint: Fixing quotes

Discussion in 'Questions & Suggestions' started by sgtlethargic, Sep 1, 2020.

  1. 1. Hit the reply button so we know who and what you're replying to. Not always, but when needed.

    2. The quote function happens automatically, but it can get mucked up. It should have [Quota] before what was written, and at the end it gets the same except there's a slash: [/Quota]. But spell it right: Quote. When it's correct, it'll look like this:
Your reply goes here, below it.

If your reply ends up inside the quote box, or maybe you accidentally deleted the end [/Quota], your reply can be hidden in the collapsed quote box. Then we have to expand that box to find your reply. We don't wanna do that.

Then there's the people that quote but don't reply till the next comment.

Yup, and if the reply is embedded in the quote, you cannot easily reply to it.

And can we teach people how to quote the words and not include the whole string of photos from the quoted post. Man that drives me nuts, the same photos over and over, page after page ‘cause folks either don’t drop the photos or don’t know how.

  7. Good idea. To do that, delete the attachments, which look something like this:
    [ATTACK=full]8675309[/ATTACK]

Or, if the picture shows, position the cursor after the picture, then hit the backspace key (one time for one picture).

But don't delete other stuff when you do that.

I often leave the picture or two that I'm replying to.

  13. Yeah, you see a lot of that. I don't understand why.

I was thinking the same thing.

At its most basic level this is kind of interesting and fairly simple stuff.

  15. I once had an old dog with new ticks.

Something else that has me wondering about those darker "quote" bars, containing the who's being quoted name, is the little red, upright arrow that is tagged on after the name. If I click on the red arrow it turns blue and sometimes that action will take me to the original post that's being quoted. This is helpful to see the original, full comment in context, especially if the quote has been trimmed or abbreviated. But other times when I click on the red arrow, nothing happens, 'cept maybe the arrow turns blue. It's like sometimes the 'arrow click' functions and sometimes it doesn't. What's up with that?

Of course someone pedantic will come along and say "hey....that's not HTML, that's BBCode"

    :)

Thanks for the lesson! although I'm afraid some of the folks who need it, have no clue what you're talking about.

  18. I think that happens when the quoted comment was deleted. The arrow has no place to go.

  19. You can (manually) quote something you find on the internet:

  20. Could be....... but it seems like I recall being able to manually scroll up and find the original comment/post. I'll check it out and see if that's the pattern. I could be misremembering.

    Dammit, I missed Taco Tuesday!:(
You can quote me on that.

  22. Ha! That is a bit of fun. :D I knew there was a code for "spoiler" but I've never tried using it. Didn't know exactly how it worked. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever seen it used by anyone on a thread here.

Now, if we could manage to put a durable end to the verb-less sentence.

On a related topic, I hate it when I respond to a thread directly above me using ^^^^ and then the poster deletes his post and leaves me hangin! Bru!

i.e. ^^^^^^ Don't get me started about pie! If 41rodderz deletes his post there is no continuity, no relevance it just doesn't make sense. I can only imagine that most of the dumb responses I read are a result of this apparently common issue.
