I think I should come visit sometime when everyone is comfortable. If you have some stuff you'd like to sell?

I've kept a lot of things over the years that I shouldn't have. I've gotten rid of a lot of it in recent years, but I'm still working on it. What comes to mind at the moment is the original wheels for my 1970 F100 parts chaser. They're outside, sitting in the dirt. I want to get them indoors before winter comes, but honestly, will I ever put them back on the truck? No.

I have a standard bore 2 bolt 454 block I bought over 20 years ago in my shed. Bare block. I paid good money for it when I got it. It's a core now, needing a complete rebuild. No plan for it. Can't seem to find anybody interested in it, not even for free. Can't seem to scrap it.

I have another 454 block that I was running until a few years ago. Revved it too far and spun a bearing. The crank was junk but the block was still good. It's been line bored and zero decked. I have another crank I could put in it, as well as a set of pistons. Don't have need for it, can't seem to sell it, shame to scrap it.

I have a couple of O/T late model motors as well, both are builders with potential. Seems everyone wants junkyard take outs. Maybe I'll sit on them for another 20 years then throw them away too.

My son bought his own place earlier this year. I'm slowly working on getting his stuff out of my garage and shed. I'm still storing a 283, ST10, TH350 and a bunch of other stuff that he left and doesn't need.

At this point, if I don't have a plan to use it for a car I own, it can go. I don't have room to bring more cars home anyway, and it's going to take a long time to complete the projects I have. Anything else is just in the way.

  9. If I was younger, that would be an option, but because of the intrinsic value of some of the stuff I have, I will have to do a serious triage, and find the articles that are in my way first, and then start digging into the engines, transmissions, and parts that have real value. I have accumulated a lot of stuff over the years, and this is going to take a determined effort on my part.
I have already sold off some stuff, and did very on the sales.
The best part is, that I made myself a lot of room in the bargain.

The 283 and the ST10 sound interesting . :) Not sure the collecting bug will ever go away, but seeing some new shelf and floor space potential is getting more appealing.

  12. The experience of my two sisters and myself mirrors yours, in that when my mom passed, we had to clean up the house. I am well aware of the trauma, (I put my back out and had to drive 400 miles to get back to work on the last day of the clean-up.
Funny thing, but late that night, still over 100 miles from home, I had to stop to get gas. The only place open was a full service station, and I was so gibbled up, that I had to roll out of the drivers seat onto my knees on the ground, just so I could unlock the gas cap. You should have seen the guy's face, I am sure if he would have had a choice, you would not have seen his asshole for feet.
I should have learned from that, but I am seriously ill, and my son is worried to distraction about the value of some of my stuff.
In the last month alone, we have already sold off close to $2,000 worth of stuff and there is a lot more to go. My future daughter in law is a master of marketing, and it just makes it so much easier to keep the stuff moving out the door.
I have committed myself to do a little every week, and in the last few weeks, have put enough stuff that is ready to go, that as soon as "she who must be obeyed" has recovered enough. it will be sale time again.
I do have some high dollar stuff, that because of desirability and the limited market, will have to be sold on ebay. I have not signed up as a seller yet, but I have checked out what I need to do.

  13. The problem with a writing a will, is the requirement to review it from time to time, in order to accommodate for things have changed substantially over the years. In our case, things have changed enough that it it has to be totally be re-written (for the third time).
The problem is not about the distribution of financial assets, but the distribution of the emotional stuff.

  14. Thanks for the excellent advice.
Don't feel bad for me, I was given a year to live thirty three years ago, and because I am so pig headed, I have beaten the odds. After a year off following the diagnosis, because the Department of Transport had pulled my medical category, with some excellent care and the help of some medical aviation experts, I was able to get my category back and fly for another 12 years.
Cancer is never easy, and because of the sever pain, bone marrow cancer is a bitch. In 2000, when my doctors ran out of options, and stated that the only option left for me was a bone marrow transplant, ( a very high risk option in 2000), I was able to use the internet to do my own research, and find enough research on an experimental drug that, in small scale studies, showed a 30% chance of controlling the disease. I was able to convince the specialist that it was my only shot, and as a result of starting on this drug, I have had complete control of my symptoms for the last 20 years. I am not in remission, but life is good.
The key, is to want to live for myself, and for the right reasons. As an old fighter pilot, I thought that I had braved danger and understood what survival meant. How wrong I was, survival and succeeding happens, one day at a time, over a period of years.
At the newly acquired age of 77, I live just for today. Tomorrow is something I can plan for, but the outcome is not in my power.
    Cancer can be beaten.

Something important to note, good stuff always sells. The price may fluctuate but there's always a buyer.

I've been cleaning out, downsizing, selling projects, whatever you want to call it and I've been surprisingly busy these last few months.

I purposely held on to the more desirable parts as I've been clearing out and as this whole debacle was taking place, I'll be honest, I figured everything would probably have to be shelved until it was over. But, it has been a pleasant surprise.

A few guys I've kept up with are really knocking out projects since there's not much else they can do.

  16. I am not completely cured yet. A friend of mine had a dual carb manifold for a flathead, and (just like a sucker), I made an offer on it. I know that I have no intention of ever running a flathead again.
I was able to talk myself out of it by thinking, why should I hang that on my wall when it would look so much better in a running car?
I was able to deny myself the manifold, but I will admit that I am still thinking about it. Go figure...

I only have a few leftover accessories now to sell as I'm keeping the cars to eventually pass them onto the kids. I've never compempleted thinning out the herd as I get older, not yet anyway. That's my legacy to them.

I keep buying and selling and tradingstuff. When I come home with something my son asks why I keep buying stuff to which I reply "it was cheap". He says that we have three or four of them already. I say "WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME THIS STASH WILL PROBABLY BE YOURS". Then he says never mind just keep buying:)

I sure need to sell off my stuff especially blocks, cranks, and heads for GMC’s but I won’t ship because of the weight. I now know I can keep just a few parts and I’m sure I’m now going to be racing much any more. It’s just tough to do.

How is it some stuff is hard to find,
and then even harder to get rid of?

It is all about timing! Try to avoid selling stuff for shipping cost. At that point give it away or throw it out.

Life is too short to try to make things appealing so someone else will buy it. Good Luck with selling your stuff.

I was about ready to just put stuff in recycling but I tried one last time on Craigslist. Not an hour later I had a deal. The gasoline gods I guess.

Selling stuff? I am still on the hunt! If course, I am under 50, so I missed the best years to accumulate cool stuff. And there is probably less hot rod stuff that made it up here into the sticks.
