Feb. '64 PHR..."Cover up that ugly"

 

We bought a body from (I'm thinking Allied Fiberglass) somewhere in CA back in '65; trucker that dropped it off thought it was funny that anybody would buy anything like that; let alone ship it across the country.

 

I've heard the Fred Steele T is for sale again but it didn't hit the reserve when it went to auction a little while back. Such a rad car and the Venture's cover puts it over the top. Anyone with a T that needs de uglying should just start cutting things off till it looks like this! One of the original low buck east coast hot rods.

 

Clean and simple........and COOL!! JW

 

The current state of mine. Moved under its own power for the first time but still have a lot to do.

I need to replace my front tires with a skinnier white wall. Question is should I do a 1 inch or 2 1/4 inch white wall, which would match the rear?

 

If you want to get the tough hot rod look then get rid of the whitewalls altogether.

 

I like black walls,but at the end of 1959,I got some used tire the sizes for free,we don't order for free,so I had white walls. I liked them and have replaced tires a number of times. Some times black,some times white/try to stay all 4 same BW or WW ,I never cared much for the very wide whites,but did kind of like the about 2in.and hate seeing a tire backward.. To Sq. about it,I got what was the low $$ tire. So don't fall for BS about only white or black,I still drive the same hot rod I built in 59. Yes=it is a 28-Bobtailed "A" bucket.

 

If your heart is set on W/W's, my thoughts are to go narrow at the front as it will give the same proportion of white to black.JW

 

I'm definitely committed to the WWs on this car, I run blackwalls on my 32.
@26 T Ford RPU you think 1" on the front then? That's what I was leaning towards.

 

I love my white walls, and would love to find a set of pie crust slicks with 3 1/2" white walls...

 

I am either way on W/W's but they can't take over or be their own stand out statement. 1'' up front would be in proportionate balance with big n little's. Do it......i dare ya!! JW

 

I would have the guys on the photo-shop thread show what it would look like with both widths.
Personally I don't think you will like the 1" WW.

Personally I would match the width of the rear tires. Looks like the front tires are new, still have the blue "preservative" on them?

 

I've had both a few times from 1959 to now,here a pick from about 1963 when I was putting a new cam in engine,but it shows,two size of WWs. I dumped the roll bar,n MC type fenders an funky windshield rods ,are long gone,other tiny give n takes like tires,rest looks same in 2020.

Ha, ya the tiny custom built in 57/8 sports car was my Dads,it was Crosley powered SCCA H-Mod racer,streetible for him. He hated to get his hands dirty,any an all things that needed cleaning or sanding in any way ,was my job,an why he did not work on any of my cars. He let me keep my junk out back in my weed work shop..
The car port was off limits most of the time for my stuff.

Yes ,now days more then ever,my Bobtailed "A" gets called a t-bucket.
I don't mind that. My son and I built a "23 T-bucket" for him together=great fun! He has a one car garage,so I'm stuck with storing it when he's not driving it.
I had built a few A's n T's for others before he was born even.
For some,if they look a lot,I'll tell them details. If they use the misused misunderstud word ratrod,I'll tell them what that really means too,an it sure as hell dose not mean a well built rod.

 

Really like the funky look of the Fred Steele bucket. More hot rods have too little California rake, than too much rake! JMHO

Gonzo, my opinion is that it should be proportional, I.E., narrower in the front, BUT I'd look long and hard for a tire that has WW on both sides for the front. It does make a difference!

Find a guy that'll do "tire cutting", industry slang for sidewall smoothing &/or adding whitewalls. There are a few around that use actual liquid rubber to roll the ww (even done in colors if wanted) onto the tire sidewall after it's been properly prepared w/a "grinder". Not the cheap-ass home-hand-job type. Unfortunately, I can't give you names, the only guy I talked to that did it years ago was in CA, haven't talked to him in decades. But work was nice.
