Technical Axle ID help...

I bought what I was told was a 49 Ford truck axle for my gasser project... Doesn’t look like it after all... I’ve looked through Sid’s and a couple other sites, but I’m not sure I’ve found what this is. Maybe a Chevy/GMC...?

 

More like 49 Chevy than 49 Ford.

looks like 1950s chevy truck to me, but it's really hard to tell with the pictures....how about moving in close with the camera, but not too close?

btw the tie rod is supposed to be behind the axle, not in front of it.

His axle looks wavy across the bottom, the Chevy axles I have aren't like that. The beam is flat all the way across the bottom.

 

Thanks for the replies. The guy doing the gasser re-do for me compared mine to a ‘54 Chevy 1/2 ton axle he has and said the backing plate bolt spacing was similar. When I poked around Sid’s and others I didn’t see any that have the non-flat bottom like mine...

The axle was just set on the trailer for transport to the chassis shop. Not staged for a photo shoot. LOL

 

49-53 Dodge maybe? The Dodge trucks have a wavey axles like that.

 

The guy I bought it from now says it may have come from an International... I should have done my homework before jumping in. Pretty typical of me.

 

robsimmons, thats not necessarily a bad thing. The International spindles were pretty popular on circle track cars.

 

studebakerjoe that is good to know. If I can find a good disc brake set up for it I may still use it. I just need to confirm what it actually is! LOL

 

Okay,... I got some pics for help in identifying this axle. The chassis builder believes it is a Chevy axle. It compares pretty closely with the ‘54 Chevy axle he has laying there.

Here is some more measurement info to help:
King pin centers are 50 1/2” apart.
Springs are not parallel - 26” center at the front and 30 3/4” at the back.
Backing plate bolt spacing is 3 1/16” apart both top and bottom. Spacing between top and bottom bolts is 4 1/2”

Can anyone help or point me to someone who can? I’m still hoping to be able to use this axle. Thanks!

Aaaaannndd..... Here we go again....

I got the Chevy kit and went to install it... Inner bearing spacer and outer bearing won’t fit the spindle... steering arm bolt holes are also a smidge and a smidge & a half off... Speedway tech dudes won’t be back until Tuesday...

I found a number on the axle... still looking for any opinions...

 

I think we may have found an important number on the axle.... Check twice, order once... Duh!
That little I inside the hat big H makes me think it ain’t no Ford nor no Chevy axle...

 

I believe it's International pickup. Haybalers as well as Chevy/GMC used that same type of drag link that has the end like a Model A Ford tie rod.

 

Well the I inside the H casting mark is for International Harvester so there is that...
