Been watching Mike piece this back together for awhile now. He has done tons of welding, fabrication, and sanding. LOTS OF SANDING!!!
40 Fords are alot bigger than Model As.
Mike, I am really looking forward to the finished product. You have done a fantastic job on this.

This isn’t the same car I bought in High School first and foremost.
Sorry for the misunderstanding!

The first car I ever bought was a 1940 Deluxe coupe, in 1965, for
$150. hard earned dollars. It had a ‘56 Olds motor with tri power.
I was a junior in HS at the time, living at home, and had to park the car on the front lawn. The carbs needed a rebuild (?) at the time and leaked gas all over my Fathers prize winning lawn. I had the car about a month, never got it running right, and killed the battery every couple of days listening to the radio.
My Dad told me “It’s gotta GO!”
I was bummed out! I ended up selling it to a kid in town for $150.
and figured I’d done pretty well!

I never got pictures of the car, but it was Fiesta Red with black fenders. I also put wide whites on it I got from my neighbor when he got new tires for his Cadillac.

That’s the background on my first car. More info to follow!

The story on the hood.
I have the stock hood that’s in perfect shape, it just needs louvers!

The hood I’m remodeling came from a neighbor who had it in his private junk yard. The bottom ( back) edge and back corners were rotted off. Apparently it had been stored on the ground at some point , standing upright.
I’m going to be running a tri power set up hopefully next summer, but didn’t want the hood to hide it. I also didn’t like the way the radiator was exposed without a hood, so came up with this brilliant idea.
Still in the design process, but I kinda like it. Decided against the top trim and latch piece and bull nosed the front today. I have the “ V-8” front trim, and the side spears if I decide to use them.
I have to talk to my Mentor and the car more to figure it out!

Love this rebuild...1940 Fords are some of the most beautiful ever build by the Ford Motor Car Company....love the gold color too...looks like you started with a real humble piece for sure...

As I'm sure you know, Mike, Baron did the same hood treatment on a '40 bigblock tudor back in the early "80s. It's still around somewhere and still looks great - - - like yours does!

Very nice! Love 40 Coupes!

 

Some updates on the car.
Putting on the shiney stuff is always fun after breathing filler and paint fumes for a while! Thats my good friend Joe who came to check up on me. He worked for the government as an Engineer out in California and knows lots of
builders, drag racers, and Salt Flats people. I hadn’t gotten around to mounting the skirts, but wanted to see how they looked. I got them on the HAMB and love em! Still thinking about the back bumper area. They are supposed to go through “U” shaped holes cut in the panel under the trunk.
I put out some serious money for the inside and outside pieces, and don’t want to chop them up! Instead , I made 3” dropped
brackets off the frame to lower everything. It’s a bit awkward ,
so now I’m thinking of adding a louvered pan to fill in the space
( kind of like a base for a conti kit). My neighbor, who is a retired body and paint guy came over during the “photo shoot” and loves it! He just kept walking around saying “ You’ve gotten pretty good at this!” He’s the guy that painted my blue ‘31 Roadster 10 years ago.

I went over the other day, the paint job looks great!!! Golden Mike. Last year Mike and I went to the Ty-Rods show. He saw this gold coupe- stopped him in his tracks-maybe it provided some inspiration. Anyway, here he is my pal Mike B
