So, I've got these 2 1953 Lincs. A pretty clean 4 door sedan, and a really rusty 2 door hardtop. First, I was going to do a clone of the Golden Sahara, first version. But I got beat to the punch with that idea. Then I was offering them to my GF's nephew, then grandson, both of whom worked on them a bit with me, then gave up. Since I'm now retired, and due to "lack of" and non-paying customers, I'm building them for myself (or maybe to sell).
Anyway, plans are to use the 4 door as the core, convert it to a 2 door, using the doors and roof off the rust bucket, chop it a bit, and see where it goes.
The 4 door I had already subframes with a narrowed Camaro sub, and installed a 302, originally w/fuel inj., now converted to carb. These I did with "the kids". So it's not far from running.
One day moving stuff around in the shop, to bring it in, and another day working on it. So far, so good! Doors off, door on, skin cut off the rear door, and trial fit. 100_2100.JPG 100_2101.JPG 100_2102.JPG 100_2103.JPG 100_2104.JPG 100_2105.JPG 100_2106.JPG

You should mention the fact that the 1953 Lincoln's won the Mexican road races back in the 50's. Ran over 130 mph !

Mark, been following your build here and on CCC. Absolutely amazing! This one is going to be a simple more or less, mild custom, with a chop.

Any specific reason for using the old B pillar and rear door as the quarter panel filler instead of cutting out that same section from the hardtop? Not saying it didn't work, just curious to know why you did it that way. I like it so far.

I didn't want to take the time to cut out the 2 door's quarters, besides they were pretty rotted out on the bottom, like the rest of the car. The 2 door "might" still have a purpose, too!

Both sides 'mostly' converted to the 2 door. Cut off the 4 door sedan roof, and stuck on the hardtop one. Hmmmm...looks a bit too short? 100_2121.JPG 100_2123.JPG 100_2126.JPG 100_2127.JPG

Rear windshield: tempered, can't cut it. Can't lean it, the corners will dip down into the quarters, and the roof to window line will be cockeyed. Solution: sink it!
Cut out the package tray. Brace the window in place. Using a shrinker stretcher, make a channel to fit under the glass (I'm using 1/2" spacers under the glass, so I can adjust the height later on. Use rubber when finished) Brace the channel, weld it to the quarters. Move the 'lip' that the rear window gasket sits on, up close to the glass (not too close, about 3/4"), extend catwalk to reach it. Weld more sheet metal from the top of the channel to the edge of the lip, for strength and in case the glass leaks. Put drains in the channel, after seam sealing and water proofing it.
Oh, I had to cut out and move in, the edges of the gasket lip, to meet the roof where it meets the quarter panels, as the roof is "smaller" now. Also fixed some rot in the 'C' pillar.
Once the front and rear glass are in, I will bodywork and primer the areas, and test the waters for selling it, "as is". If no offers, I will continue working on it.
    More later..... 100_2131.JPG 100_2133.JPG 100_2137.JPG 100_2140.JPG 100_2141.JPG 100_2144.JPG

  16. Cool project.
Approximately how much is it chopped, compared to the stock 2-door hardtop?

Just Gary, it's around 2 inches vertical, about 2 1/2 inches out of the windshield.

Mark, I wanted to thank you for having us at your shop last Friday. We had a good time talking cars and making plans for when I can get my shoebox coupe to you. The Lincoln is looking good. Though after seeing that rear bumper on it, I think I may have to find me some of those bullets and surround for mine! Oh and thanks for the info on the hood peak.. Jersey Mike is going to make me a piece for mine! thanks again!

Got the bodywork on the roof done and in primer. Also was able to cut the front windshield. I think I have to make some 'adjusters' to get the rear window in the right position to get it sealed. Putting rubber spacers in the channel isn't working well. 100_2156.JPG 100_2164.JPG 100_2165.JPG

Finished up the bodywork on the "ex-rear doors", and got the rear windshield in place! Not an easy task, either. Had to get the rubber gasket to stay on on the top and sides, and sneak the window into the opening. I wound up making 2 "adjusters" out of 1 " set screws, a nut and 2 washers, to adjust the rear window upwards to meet the roof. So it could seal. The channel it sits in is lower than the bottom edge of the glass, and has drains built in.
The lower edge of the gasket was cut off, and then cut so only the outer part remained. This was trimmed and then using urethane windshield sealer, glued to the glass, and the edge of the body, to seal it, and look correct. It's now at the point where it's up for sale, in the classifieds here. But in a couple weeks, I'll continue working on it, until the next stage. 100_2168.JPG 100_2170.JPG 100_2171.JPG

  24. Weird, i just bought a 53 lincoln hardtop, always been a model A guy. It's a rock solid car, just had the windows busted out in 1962-all of it!! It's solid because the guy that had it put it inside 58 years ago. Now, i just need that back glass. At least i can watch this thread, & see where it goes

When I saw this I thought wow Ford had front steer in the fifties!! Then I saw it was a sub frame swap... LOL

Those fifty's Lincoln's are some of the most exotic looking cars I ever saw..

My buddy hunted up the fenders, hood and front bumper/grill and mocked them up on the Linc to see how it would look. Looks great! Now I've got our Photo 100_2187.JPG 100_2191.JPG shop wizards putting some wide whites, and colors on the pics to get more inspiration!
