Here's another one of mine. Tractor Supply flat black mixed with some gloss black. Got tired of it after 10 years, it was too hard to wash and dry. And did some polishing on it last weekend.

Don Butler's (RIP) A-V8 I think it was a matte black I'm pretty sure it was not "flat"

Note the light colored satin sedan. It shows better on film.

Really liked the flat look when I started seeing more examples at shows over the last several years. Thought it might we an option on a Willys project in the shop. When the wagon found us, it had well patina'ed lacquer from a mid-60's spray job. First order was glass and rubber (it rained inside the car at every orifice), and somehow in that process I rationalized painting the top flat to somewhat match the patina on the bottom, since the glass and trim was out of the way. Well...over the last 4 years between drive line, sub-frame, wiring, and influence from my buds, now the whole thing is flat. Used Hot Rod Flatz and eventually got a fair handle on how to shoot it. Classic White over Victory Red. Not what I originally planned - or didn't plan - IMG_1437.JPG IMG_1480.JPG

There's been a crazy number of misunderstanding by those too young to of lived it, about how things were in the time from 1955 to 65,sometimes called "The Golden Age of Hot Rods n Custom" This time is often emulated or copied as close as they know how. It's a great compliment to those like my self who did designed n built hot rods an custom in 55 to 1965 time gap. I even had one of my full customs in Car Craft Mag. Jan. 1963,but also did many car shows before an after,I pinstriped, did names on cars, plus Air Brushed Wild car "T"-shirts at car shows under my art name "The Bat".
Point being; I was far more in the Rod n Custom Scenes,an knew what was going on ,then those younger or just not into all of it.
Primer/flat/dual/ or some crazy name like hotrod black<now ,was just primer=preparation for shiny finish.
No one thought of primer as a finish,no one thought primer look good,an some need to know that.
It OK if you like your car unfinished, that's up to you, but don't tell your self lies that it was done that way as a finish. Your not copying the hard working rod n custom guys from the time.
Sure some never made it to shiny, but shiny was the plan. Don't copy those to lazy to finish what they started,an don't use BS about how shiny cost too much=That's also being lazy. "Will there's a Way"
Going passed 1965 things slowed down for Rods n Custom for a time, when it did pick up some speed again,it looked to me ,like few wanted to finish there build or fix a faded old one.
After WW2 my dad came home with you can do anything if you try ,attitude, past it to me,along with do it right or not at all.
Have fun with dual if you like it,but don't like it because some fool told you, Primer was a hot rod finish = No it was not,an don't keep passing BS,like what you like OK,don't BS new guys. There going to be a time not that far away, none of us old guys will be around, to tell how it really was. Yes ,there are odd ball exception to every thing,if you like a time in history, then don't misrepresent it,if going for how style was. Going for now style is a new game, just don't call it the old one.
