Anybody know of a reputable Transmission shop in the Southwestern Ontario/Eastern Michigan area that can go through this thing and check/freshen it if needed...?
Most of my local Transmission shops look at you like you have 2 heads when you walk in asking about one.."We can build you a nice Turbo 350 with a 3500 stall converter..."
    Umm....no thanks fellas.

Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Scott

  2. I'll definitely be paying attention to this. I've got a pair of Hydro's at home...one in the frame, one on the floor. The one in the frame works and shifts, but I'd like to have it gone through.

I was hoping for something a bit closer to home, but I may have to take what I can get....
This one was supposedly freshened up and stuck under the bench 20yrs ago,so it will at a bare minimum need seals, etc,I am sure.

  7. Hydro Motive became TSI (Transmission Specialties Inc) out of Addison, Illinois. Apparently there is an old timer there who used to build them back in the day, who still can.

Still, I'd like to find somebody closer if possible.

    Living right now in Mississauga.

Dated a few girls down in Sarnia over the years...spent a lot of time there. Nice town. I like it.

  8. There's two guys in Buffalo N.Y. that can you can try. Dick Rutzen, 716 425 1363. He's retired but does trannys on the side. Tom Nictora - Transmaster Transmissions 716 826 8686. ( He did my Hydro ). Good luck

There must be somebody in the D who still works on these..?

  11. Thanks Art! I assume you're satisfied with the work Tom did on your Hydro?

Yeah Scott, I don't think it gets much closer than that!

  12. Yea, he did a good job. I did have a problem with it but he made good and I was satisfied.

I am under the impression that the old hydros were pretty much small Allisons. Talk to an Allison rebuilding shop. My .02.

Get ahold of Dave, aka "Shifts" - HAMB, he owns Midtown Transmission in Eau Claire Wisconsin. They do a ton of vintage transmissions and has parts too.

    Here is his website: http://www.midtown-transmission.com/

Thanks! Its still sitting in my storage locker,I need to get down there and drag it out soon for some drivetrain mockup.
I think I'be found a guy locally who can do it,but he is definitely going to get interrogated before he is allowed to just start tearing into what is essentially an irreplaceable transmissions for me.

With your guy's level of experience,he might be getting the job if it requires anything major.

I also need to get cracking and figure out exactly what I'm going to need for a bellhousing...Initially I thought I'd just call Lakewood for a new one,but life is probably not that simple.....
Anybody got an example of what they used to bolt their Hydro to a Hemi?

I'm all set....I've had about half a dozen HAMBers hook me up with knowledgable guys and/or parts sources, and if anything is broken,I can just have a buddy whittle something out on the CNC mill for me.
And I know all about how antiquated and obsolete it is....but if I wanted "new technology" I would be on an LS-1 Camaro site right now,right...?:)

What can I say?The car has to have the right parts, that are correct for the era I'm trying to build to,or in my eyes, its just gonna look like a half hearted attempt at building an accurate, traditional,"way it would have been back in the day" type of car.

Ps: The correct usage of the term OCD involves rearranging the letters into their correct, alphabetical order,so if anybody asks,I have CDO.....lol!

    Thanks Jeff,
I know its an uphill battle, but in my eyes it really is worth the added trouble and expense.I wish Groucho was still on here, cause I hear he was sort of a Hydro "Guru" himself, rigging up valves to adjust line pressure from the cockpit,etc.....
I will have to try to talk Bottle Bob into giving me his phone number.

    Jeff,
I bet building that Cad was no walk in the park for your buddy either.Sounds like a very cool car he's got.:)

I think that you may be referring to Bill Swaney in Mars Pa.
Back in the day, his "Swaney Hydrosticks were some of the best.

  24. Amen! I agree with you 100%

Which is why I'll likely be tearing into one of my Hydro's this winter to figure out how they work. Just want to build a cradle for it first. Damn things are heavy.

    I just remembered...years ago a friend built a 283/hydro combo
and it seems to me, the single coupling hydro he used was out of
a Hudson Jet and is physically smaller than the usual size as used
in GMCs, Olds, Lincoln etc. FWIW.

Like the internal adjustment dual range Hydros. Just need the special band adjustment tools that I have. Also need to shifter lever adjustment tools.
