History What year is this Ford chassis?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 65standard, Aug 10, 2020.

  1. I’m asking because I’m having a hard time getting the clutch pedal and linkage to line up? I think I have a mixed bag of different year parts. I’m guessing 1941 AB25E1E8-FFDD-44EA-947E-5E1A425519A9.jpeg

  2. That’s my final answer

  3. 69A7313E-56A4-4451-AA92-B13CE49DE6CF.jpeg The front axle specs out as a ‘37-‘41
    38 1/2” wishbone center
    48 1/2” spindle centers.

  4. It must be a hodgepodge of parts.

Can we see the brake backing plates? Could help

  7. Looks to have the correct wishbone with the spring in front. Do you have a pic of the axle ends?

Never seen one that new, must be 1946-48. What is the deal with the rear spring? Bob

  9. Possible on the 41. I forget the interruption of WW2.
Here is a side shot of a 41. Maybe it can help. Not aware of the subtle differences between the years.

I believe that front crossmember is for a straight 6 , also that looks like a pickup battery box on the RH frame rail...42-47 pickups had 4 parallel leaf springs so I'm guessing 1941 pickup....

'41 would have a panhard bar and the stabilizer..Since there is only the stabilizer bar I would say 1940, first year.

i agree with KingFord ., also still has transverse springs, six cylinder crossmember and no body mounts on sides of the frame. has to be 41 p.u.

  15. Would a truck have a gas tank on the back?

    was it added?

It would in 40-41 the 46 had it under the seat by that point.

  18. Appears to have brackets on the outside of the frame just before the rear wheels, p/u's didn't have those.
I've never seen a p/u with a ribbed gas tank.
BB's right about the gas tank locations.

It's a passenger car chassis, 41 or 42-48. All 35 to 40, along with 41 PU, had the doubled frame "gloved" as shown. The later car chassis had the reinforcement, installed as a box. IMG_4363.JPG

Marty, you clever fella. You "stood up" that rear crossmember. I have never seen that done before. I cut mine out and replaced it, I like yours better. Clever Marty.

Pretty easy to tell the difference.

  25. I think you can narrow it down to '41 based on the axle. It's a different animal from the '35-'40 frames or the '41 pickup frame. The '41 pickup frame is essentially a '40 car frame minus the body mounts riveted onto the outside rails, and the 6 cylinder '41 pickups sit a little higher in the front than other '40-'41 pickups because they have a deeper front crossmember that is unique to the '41 6 cylinder pickup. Somewhere I have an old issue of Rod & Custom boxed up that has a tech article on how to use that '41 6 cylinder pickup crossmember to put a small block Ford in the '35-'40 car/'35-'41 pickup chassis. I'm so old I can remember when car magazines ran how-to articles on doing stuff with junkyard parts. Been 50+ years since I saw a '40-'41 Ford pickup in a junkyard. I'm pretty sure you have a '41 car frame, but you can find the serial number of the vehicle stamped in 3 places on top of the left frame rail--next to the steering box, about mid-way around where the B pillar of the car would be, and on the arch over the rear axle. Check that number against the listings on Mac VanPelt's site to confirm what you have.

  26. Find the serial number and that will tell you what year the frame is...
