So I'm channeling and chopping a 1931 Model A coupe on a boling brothers chassis 5-12

    Putting in a 351W

Tall guy ....would you put in a manual or auto trans???

I want to put in a T5 but scared i'm gonna be super tight and not enough room to work a clutch and shifter.

or should I just run a automatic ???? or maybe not channel and get a different frame height??

    NEED HELP ......

Any kind of channel sucks up pedal room fast. Also, you might have to push that long ass Ford engine back into the firewall a bit which makes it even worse. If your jeans are 34X32, you might be alright, if they are 34X36 you are fucked.

I am 6'1". 29 sedan, as you can see no chop or channel. 302 ford, 4" recess firewall, AODE trans. Honestly if it was chopped or channeled I wouldn't have the leg room to be comfortable. That's just me and mine. The bell housing for the AODE is huge and would intrude into your cabin a lot and would steal the place your accelerator pedal would go. The way mine went together there is no way I could put a clutch in it and then want to drive it. Again just my .02c

  13. I've got a 351/AOD in my '29 AA cab, 4-inch setback in the firewall, homemade tilt steering to get in and out since I'm 6'1" and old (71). Not ideal, not for long cruising, but doable.

Cruising town or travelling to places far away? For me it would be no channel and auto. I drive alot though. 8500 miles last year. I like comfort over cool factor.

Your'e not driving it much then do want you want. You won't be in it long enough to get tired of the way it rides. Seems like a waste to spend that much time for short drives

  17. My advice would be to find one like you want to build at a car show and sit in it. I used to admire a chopped /channeled '32 roadster until I rode in it. Five miles was enough, I am sure glad it wasn't mine and I could get out and walk away at the end of the ride.

The cab is glass and stretched 8 inches. Would never channel a car.

  21. OK, tall guy here, 6' 5". With a 31 coup. Not a Sedan, not a pick up. Big block Olds. Fire wall only setback approximately 1". Chopped 4 1/2 inches. Only channeled 1". No way could I drive it if it was a stick. Automatic is OK for up to an hour at a time.

I'm here... 4 of them on the road... 6'2"
    208 lbs
But I'm staying out of this because I run bangers. I have to stay in them longer so I have to be as comfortable as I can.

No harm intended, but simply put, do you want to be the coolest guy in the carpark with a chopped and channelled vehicle built for a contortionist or would you prefer a comfortable, long distance driving hot rod capable of giving you the courage to want to drive it regularly.

Not to mention the fact that the further you push your seat back the less visibility you have and this can be compounded if you have a rake on the car as well.
It can be frustrating at traffic lights and leave you driving almost blind on long steep down hill descents.

I have a Model A Tudor with no chop or channel and functional rear seat and I found it tough enough at a height of 6 feet tall.
I ended up taking my front spring back to non reversed to reduce some of the rake and lowered my drivers seat more than 1 inch to ease the pain.

    Your project and your call...

this isn’t about ride quality .....

This about having enough room to use a clutch and a manual transmission

  30. Don’t channel it. You will lose massive amounts of pedal room. I’d set the body up on the frame (unchanelled) then set the the motor, trans, pedals, steering and the seat up. Seat the seat up in it as low as you can and the sit in it to see how much you can chop it and still be comfortable. Sitting in another guys car will give you an idea, but it was set up for him not you. Everything else should be set up before you chop. This is how I have done it and more than one time that 5 inch chop I wanted would have made the car undrivable for me. I’m 6’2 with a size 12 shoe. Pedal room and cab height are key for me to fit and be comfortable
