School me on Mitchell Overdrives. There’s an eBay Model A chassis that has this rectangular box in the middle of the torque tube, see photo. Reliable? Strong? Easy to operate? Ratio? Thanks.
Some useful information on the Ford Barn, if you do a search. Don't know the price of the one you referenced, but the Mitchell unit sells new for around $3500.00
Not at all. Designed and tested behind a low perf 454. I looked at one for an early chevy torque tube and didnt get it done. 30% OD as I recall. Its more of a gear splitter
Reliable, yes. Strong yes, but keep in mind built for a Model A trans and banjo rear. Easy to operate, yes. Just a cable operated lever next to the shift lever. The overdrive has synchros so you can split shifts with no grinding. Ratio, 26 or 36 percent available. I've installed 5-6 of them and never an issue or failure.
Mitchell Manufacturing, Model 1000 Overdrive for Ford V8's 1932-1948. I had one of these units in my 1947 Ford coupe. It had a cable operator mounted in the dash. Very easy to use. Info at Email: [email protected].
Have one in my 40 since I finished it 9yrs ago or so and the best thing I done.I have a 36% with the flathead and org trans.Opped for cable shift not to cut hole in floor.Really smooth ansd no trouble
They are available in 26% or 36% overdrive. They make them for the Model A and the V8 torque tubes. I've had one in my '47 for about 15 years and it's great, many out of state trips and hasn't missed a beat. I have a pull cable under the dash. I've used Borg Warner overdrives and I think these are easier and probably stronger.
rookie question: was this option available closer to the model year, or is it a "modern improvement"? thanks
