Event Coverage Nostaglia Drags, Santa Pod 08/01/20

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rottenpop, Aug 2, 2020.

  1. What? an actual event? It,s pretty quiet over here.......and given the current situation, I 'm kinda liking it. BUT! I miss the Drags and I need a fix so I paid for my E-Ticket ( advance tickets only, nothing on the gate ) grabbed my trusty old Nikon, packed something to eat and drink and set off early saturday morning for some fun! Not forgetting my face mask, just in case...

Created by the crew at Santa Pod as a stand alone event for those missing their kicks, it's pre 1980 nostalgia cars and bikes. Seeing as I'm shooting for the HAMB, I gotta be careful! So, wanna see some pics?

Thought you did. Oh, just a side note to all the great photographers on here, I was fighting the light all day. One minute intense sunshine, then really cloudy and threatening rain. My left eye is still slighly blurry today but it'll come right.
    Enjoy.

You missed the southeast gassers at Lyons, Indiana . The best true nostalgia race going . Not some old Super Gas cars dressed up as nostalgic cars.

great to see such great coverage - especially for those of us where more events are getting put off until next year - even John Force Racing will not be on the track this year

Brilliant !!! Thank you for the considerable effort of taking super pix and quickly posting them. It is great to be able to virtually attend a nostalgia race the day after it was run and with such a fine turn out of cars

Great pics, nice track, and great weather (for England). That Plymouth/Dodge Wagon has got some kind of hook, the Nasty Habit Willys Coupe needs a new back-up "girl", and that 57 Pontiac "Pro Mod" car is something else. Overall, I rate it all a W-O-W, just W-O-W!!! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I would have loved to have been there but, Life's not playing ball at the minute. I thought from the photos it was race crew only, but it looked like a good turn out?

The "Honky Tonkin" 57 Chevy looks familiar, was it shipped over here to race, I think I saw it run at the CHRR at Famoso many years back.

  22. You are correct Denny and I'd ............errrr, forgotten!
Jerry Denning and Lee Pike, ran it at the CHRR. It's under new ownership now.

Hey Fegsta, that Williams Brothers '34 runs as hard as all their other cars and was beautifully put together. Personally, I'd try and hide the coilovers...but it runs 10's.
10's. No fuss, no drama. 10's.

Yep it did go over to the states, then they built honky tonkin 2 that runs just as good both cars run very true and reliable. I did ask Lee and Jerry what and when on number 3 and they said they had been thinking about it, honky 1 went on the road when for awhile when kerry tate had it.

Lee had his 32 roadster over the states for the gnrs a few years back. That was a very qwick car, then they got into full race, and always put on a good show. Surprised they didn't go. Jerry has built some very good 32s and others a very talented chap and nice with it.

Great pictures! One of the things on my bucket list-come to some races at Santa Pod.
A little history lesson: If I am not mistaken, Santa Pod sits on what used to be Podington Army Air Base in WW2. It was home to the 8th Air Force, 92nd Bomb Group H which flew B-17's. I befriended an old guy who was a pilot that flew around 30 missions. He told me he flew 2 missions on D Day over the beaches. He had a lot of good stories. Those guys deserved the title of The Greatest Generation.
I believe on the entry road to the raceway is a large monument dedicated to the 92nd Bomb Group-"Fames Favored Few"
