Hi everyone im a pre teen living in texas and wanting to learn any old paint techniques from the lowrider and kustom era that a few people only know my goal is to become the gene winfeild and Larry Watson of bikes like doing no one is doing so im not painting cars right now but learning bit by bit from a close freind birth day febuary 21 2008
So a few weeks ago I got a gift from my grandparents that I have been wanting for 7 years a schwinn bike it's a girl bike though but I dont mind only if it has my personal touch to it next thing you know its all apart in the next 6 hours ever since the minute I saw that bike I wanted to get to work on it birth day febuary 21 2008
First thing I did to it was put on a set of new wheels that yellow is not gonna cut it so I got a pair of red ones that came off a old bike and filled the tires and it looked perfect and put the sissy bar and fork back on it to see what it will look like and it was the best thing I saw thru this whole pandemic birth day febuary 21 2008
After a day or two I went and sanded almost the whole frame like my dad said in one night (the picture was when I first started sanding) birth day febuary 21 2008
I named the bike cherry pie after the flake thats going on it and thats were the question comes in what did guys do back in the day that no one does anymore for the bike im thinking gold leaf on the fender edges and go all out on them and do a cob webbing paint job with a gold leaf outline but its just a thought maybe I'll change the whole thing tomorrow who knows its just how I like it and how good it looks birth day febuary 21 2008
If you want to paint bikes, check out the late Roger Cassano from SoCal. He was known as paint by RAJA. Good luck to you and remember that preparation is the key.
Go for it, and show us what's going on with the bike. I hope you get some good tips to help keep you interested. You sound like a go-getter.
Uh,oh! You have started down the tortured path of those that modify things that have wheels. Model cars, bikes, maybe a dirt bike, a car, motorcycle and before you know it you can’t move in the garage. Stick with it Vinny, you are off to a good start. Read, listen and learn, it will serve you well and some day the new guys will be looking to you for advice.
Be aware that sanding tubes and other non flat surfaces with a flat disc can result in flat spots in the finish. Try wrapping sand paper around the tube and sanding length wise. When I was your age I repainted my bike about every week. The last color was Honduras Maroon. Chrome acorn nut covers, a chrome chain guard painted white inside, front fender moved to the back and the first set of ape hanger bars in town finished the look. Have fun!
I do have plans of other bikes though than cherry pie i have a bmx thats gonna be a chopper bike and paint it a pastel pink and name it "palm springs" this was is my first bike I was gonna do but got carried away with other things now im doing it birth day febuary 21 2008
Plus after these two im gonna try to do a red baron trike that has the big helmet on top and the iorn cross in between the bars and other crazy stuff but thats later and focusing on now with cherry pie is to get it bare metal and do all the crazy paint stuff to it and its gonna have a bent fork and a kustom seat birth day febuary 21 2008
Vinny, Art Himsl use to paint choppers back in the day check out some of his work! Keep after it! Lippy
Best thing you can do is start hanging around local body shops. See if they’re looking for someone to help out . It’s amazing what you learn being around guys that do any trade professionally. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I was thinking since its taking a while for my bike and I thought about my first car. My choice a 1951 chevy 4 door larry watsons first car was a 51 2 door so two painters with the same first car birth day febuary 21 2008
That's not a bad choice at all, even with four doors, so a Pontiac would also work. Chevys up to 1954 look fine with four doors. Good luck. And keep working on that bike.
Vinny says tomato, you say tomahto. I have no idea how many members the HAMB has but I bet not even 2% can tell a 1950 from a ‘51 Chevrolet.
So the paint job is cherry pie and mind splitter roth metal flake and pinstriping plus a gold leaf outline maybe some other stuff but ill see birth day febuary 21 2008
I completely finished the chain guard and the bike is not gonna go in the paint booth by next week. But I'll do the chain guard and just base it off that. birth day febuary 21 2008
