And by my interpretation this is covered in the first paragraph of the PP rules, 5.E.4. Full stock bed, etc

  10. John,
You and Dave and the rest of the crew have a safe trip and lots of success at B'ville! There are several of us here in the Valley that will be monitoring the SCTA coverage on the computer. Good luck and stay safe and well my friend!

Im looking at 5.D.5 – . . .with full stock bed, unaltered in height, width or contour . . .

Surely the tailgate is part of the bed assembly.

I've seen vehicles bounced for less than this.

  12. Yup. We are just trying to help.

To the OP, here is an example of what will fly in Production Classes. There is a VERY famous 80s Dodge Charger that runs Mopar headlight covers. Basically two pieces of plexi or lexan. A few years back I was helping a guy building a variant of this car trying to source NOS MOPAR headlight covers, none to be found and unless they have the correct Factory markings home made ones would not pass Production muster.

So for the lack of the old embossed letters you are willing to drive to Bonneville, get a possible record and wait for a protest, that will happen??
This deal with replica bodies for classes as in roadsters and coupes, you are in PRODUCTION class.

Have a safe trip and see you on the salt!!

Anybody who protests because of lettering on the tailgate is off my Christmas list and Unfriended on FB

  16. People can be funny. But Production is a funny class. We had folks that claimed the 416 cage wasn't legal since it did not have bed bars from the upper halo.

    Rich –

It ain't the lettering – it's the contour.

On another note – I've seen the bastardidation of the Street Roadster rules thru the years. When they finally declared they shouldn't have headlight lenses smaller than 5" (the lens of dual headlights), they allowed the plastic lens to wrap around the headlight bucket. All of a sudden, 29 Model As had flush doors –with no external hinges. And the Coupe' Pillar was almost non-existant. Gone was the gas cap. And they called it an Exact Replica. Buy a few drinks and become buddies.

Production should be Production. It's much easier showing that "this" is Production than saying "Well, I'm sure this is what you meant."

  19. So if I scratch the paint will it change the contour enough to be illegal??

I'm no expert on Ford tailgates – but I don't remember them having the raised lettering. It surely isn't the Production tailgate. And, I agree with Tony – why do it if it might get you disqualified for a record. If someone brings it up in Inspection, they could move your entry into Time Only.

It may offer no aero advantage or disadvantage, but you can't prove it. And if you thought you could, it wouldn't matter as it's not Production.
