Hey guys, I'm considering buying a car that was nicely hand pin-striped. The only problem is, words were also pin-striped onto it. Small words, but still. What's the best way to remove without disturbing the paint? Thanks, Carl
Depending on what paint was used, old vs. new one shot and how long it has been on the car, I have seen some you can take off with a fingernail. I would not make it a deal breaker.
I had my Mysterion fully striped by a pro but the color of blue was too dark and the line was too wide. Didn't want to ruin the catalyzed urethane candy lime gold paint job so I sanded all the striping off with 400 wet paper. Went really fast and a cinch to quickly re-color sand w/ 600/1500 and polish before restriping.
Had some removed from mine. I think they sanded it off and polished the clear. Can't tell it was ever done. Phil
non hardener will come with easy off. If it has hardener easy off wont touch it. Yellow smelly can, dont bother with the blue can i like to spray some in a cup, then dab it on with a qtip so i can keep it on the stripes and not the paint. ive had it slightly discolor light colored paint a couple of times. In those cases a quick buff of the paint has worked. dab it on, let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes then scrub, repeat as needed
MEK is what some of the better pin stripers use to clean the paint before striping and to remove old pinstripes.
Another one that sounds crazy is the mr clean eraser. I took names off the back of a bike one with one and kept water on it the entire time Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
EasyOff with a 1/2” cheap paint brush with bristles cut dow to 3/8” with some dykes. Sanding or rubbing will remove your base paint and you don’t want to do that if possible. Just remember if the main paint is faded you may still see it unless it is clear coated before the stopping.
