Thinking seriously about buying another Model A Sedan, this time it's a '30 Model AV8 Fordor. According to the seller, he bought this as a complete basket case from a guy that had gathered most of the parts but failing health forced him to sell before assembling. The seller and his wife built the car themselves and finished it a couple of years ago. Since that time only a few hundred miles were put on the car. Seem's that they joined the local Model A club and were treated pretty poorly by the purist's in the club and so they lost interest. Anyway, here's the scoop! 1930 Model A Fordor Sedan with a fresh '53 flattie, new radiator, '32-'39 V8 transmission ( unsure what year & it pop's out of 2nd when decelerating), unsure about rear end, hydraulic brakes ( unsure about vintage). New clutch assembly ( chatters when releasing & release's about an inch from the floor) 16 wires with new tires. Overall it look's good, has a lot of unnecessary do-dad's and will require some repairs but nothing serious that I can see. Drive's and ride's good but certainly not perfect. Here's a few picture's... As I said, not perfect but I think it would be a decent buy at $10K. What ya think?
Looks good from here. I don't know about the price (seems like a deal to me) but I love hearing what people pay.
Looks pretty darn nice to me,,,but I’m not an expert on this . The price sounds very good too,,,,,I would think 10 grand is a fair price . Since it is not perfect and the price is reasonable,,,it would be a great one to drive all the time . Most people buy something and have so much money involved,,,they never feel safe about driving them . Always worried about the value,,,,and they might get a scratch on it . They just sit in a garage or barn,,,,,and after 40 or 50 years are passed down in an estate sale . Tommy
The thing about four doors is that they are full of wood. It's hard to determine condition with the interior installed. The wood is a structural aspect of the body and needs to be inspected or assured that it has been repaired replaced. Other than that it is a good buy.
Undo the doodads, dropped axle, bigs and littles, fix what you find as you drive and your cruizin fat and sassy for $12k with doodads to sell...can't get hurt too bad there. Look forward to the look what I just bought post.
Yes, drop the front end and put smaller tires on the front. Seems like a very fair, if not great price.
Looks like a good enough deal to me. Is it the photo or does the cowl look like its mounted higher than the radiator top? Looks like it goes kinda up at where it meets the hood.
guys dont blink over five times that amount to get a new truck at a dealership thats gonna lose value the second ya drive it off the lot, and in 50 years aint nobody gonna give a shit about......10 grand for that sedan .....as somebody said ; the heavy lifting is done......... and the clock is ticking
i would look at it like what could i build that car for. and the answer would be it would take probably twice that amount plus hundreds of build hours if thats the car you want you can't go wrong on the other hand if your buying to flip, a 4 dr sedan A is a little harder to get rid of and that's probably why the lower price
Couldn’t build it for that !! the issues it has sound minor in the grand scheme of things. I like it! With a few mods ya got a nice rod Congratulations
Seller has a photo album with picture of him and his wife as they built it, not all but some of the wood was replaced with oak.
two people above ^^^ mention wood, yes 4 doors have a lot more wood than a tudor. they are still using horseless carriage build technique. all wood frame so when its bad the doors are loose, the body will settle down on the frames, etc. wood kits are very expensive, and its hard to just replace a couple bad parts because you end up with the whole car ripped apart to get access. 4drs make a nice family car, but check the wood condition. crawl under it with an ice pick and stab it every where. bad wood=bad car
I would not want to catch someone stabbing at my car with an ice pick! Nor would I be happy seeing someone with a bare magnet on my painted sheet metal... have some respect for other people's property.
there's been quite a few post lately where people have remarked when looking for a car [they would unbolt body to look for correct #'s, yank interior out, drag magnet's all over.now poke holes with ice pick] i say that talk is full of shit, you would get a good ole fashion ass whoopin by most owner's
no ice pick? ever been under a model A ? the wood is exposed. you dont have to kill it, just want to see if its soft or falling apart. same with a wood boat. we are talking about the strength of the whole car if its wood, so if you wont let me crawl under it with a tool of some sort, i am gone
i've built my share of model A's building 28 right now. the only wood underneath is the front and middle floor board, the the 4 doors were built by coach builders either murray or briggs and they were built with wood frame with sheet metal nailed to it. not accessable underneath but from inside behind interior
Correct, Ford made most of their own bodies...but the Fordors were farmed out to Briggs and Murray. Lots of wood in them babies. The only exception is the '31 Slant Window...with virtually NO wood. Both Murray and Briggs were competing for the new '32 body contracts and the '31 Slant Window was the precursor to the new (structural) "woodless" '32 bodies.
Well, you know, I'm pretty happy with mine. 10k with a flatty sounds like a pretty good deal to me, considering with the wheels/tires/dropped suspension and interior I'll be into mine for more than that and we haven't even talked about paint and all the associated mess with windows, seals, etc. Now, I will play devil's advocate on one smalllllllll detail......remember you sold your Tudor because it was small and tight. I do have to fold a bit to get in and out of that smaller front door on mine compared to a Tudor, so just putting that out there. Nice looking car though....I agree, dropped front and rear, bigs and littles and you are in bid'ness. Guess you're gonna want all your Model A tools back, aren't you? LOL
