It used to be the standard but most shops are skipping the copper now. Just doesn't look right to me without it.

So, what shops are doing the old copper, nickel, chrome plating?

    Thanks,

    Root

I used them for some of the more difficult plating on the dream rod and they did the supercharger on the futurian, excellent work

Cool. I like to try and multitask when I am building. Send out chrome and polishing etc while I am building other cars. That way, it’s ready when I am.

Nobody does it better than Jon Wright and Custom Chrome. Grafton, Ohio I've used him for more than 30 years with no problem. He only does copper, nickle and then chrome.

I have a set of backing plates I thought I would try someone out on. If I like it, there will be lots more.

I have also used Jon Wright. Excellent work but you are going to pay top dollar and it will take a long time, in my experience.,

I have no idea  If I start handing out his contact info I'll never get anything back! Seriously, this piece had a lot of pot rot. He says I am lucky he doesn't charge by the pound for copper.

Yes advanced plating in Tennessee. They did most of the plating on my convertible, do great work. Most of mine was die cast which is difficult in its own rite

I called them once and the guy was pretty arrogant. I wasn’t impressed.

  18. I used Lemon Grove Plating for years and there work was excellent, but shipping across country made it very expensive, that's when I started doing business with Advanced Plating. HRP

The Ranch Wagon script shown on top was very pitted pot metal, I purchased the other one on ebay and it was much nicer.

This is how they looked after they were replated.

It makes me wonder. If they are eliminating the copper, nickel, are they also eliminated the "baking" process to eliminate hydrogen embrittlement on some parts?

I have been using “The Chrome Shop” in Menasha Wisconsin for many years, never a disappointment. They do exceptional work and are very fussy. They are a small shop so you get personal service, they specialize in collector vehicle plating.

Superior Chrome Plating in Houston TX triple plates with copper backing. They're kind of a smaller operation but have done excellent work on every piece I've brought them so far. They were afordable but not cheap, but good plating costs money.

  22. I used Custom Metal Finishing in Indiana for the problem parts on the Mysterion. They did the 6 Stromberg WW carbs for less than half of what I was quoted by the few shops that would even offer to do them. The topper is they even chrome plated the '62 Plymouth headlight door which is thin aluminum and has a deep internal surface. Chrome doesn't flow into places like that but they got it to work. I lived in California at the time so it was all mail order work.

S & H in Nashville, Tenn. and Dan's Polishing in Adamsville, Tenn. Both do great work.

  25. Hydrogen embrittlement is only an issue on heat treated parts, generally those Rockwell C of 30 and higher. Regular parts don't need the HE baking. Below Rc 30 is just not susceptible to HE.
The HE baking would be an extra charge on any plating job.

The copper is to fill imperfections in the part. Then they polish it they may have to copper it again to fill the imperfections. The nickel is to impart the color. The chrome is clear. Advance plating goes the extra step and it costs money. (ie) chemicals, polishing ect... the EPA puts a heavy price on the good chrome shops. Chrome isn't just chrome there is a lot of labor involved especially a part that is in bad condition. Thats why it cost so much.

I had the same thing happen. I called and asked if it was possible to send pictures of six small pot metal pieces and get a ballpark estimate. The only answer I got was" If you have to ask for an estimate , you can't afford it"
    End of conversation!

So, to end an age old argument, are leaf springs in that range?
