This was just posted SCTA Southern California Timing Association 34 mins · To All, The “image” of SCTA has been brought into question in a recent statement sent to the SCTA Board. Let me reassure each and every one of you that the “image” & integrity of the SCTA is first and foremost on our minds in every decision that we make. The membership has voted to have Bill Lattin & myself lead the SCTA for the last 6 years running. We have been through countless interviews and news conferences. In each of those, we have strived to maintain the image and integrity of the SCTA. This situation is no different. We started this endeavor just like we always do. First, we contacted the local health department to obtain our “Mass Gathering” permit. Obviously knowing we are in the midst of a pandemic; we were hoping for the best. They asked us to submit our stipulations, which we did. They informed us a short time later that our plan had been approved. Excited with that we moved on to the BLM for our use permits. They also quickly approved our plan. All outstanding news at this point. Knowing that because of the pandemic our entries and volunteers would be affected, we sent out a survey to our workers asking certain questions. To date we have received over 100 surveys. More than 80% have answered that they are ready, willing and able to attend and work. We know there are people who will choose not to attend, and we totally understand and applaud their honesty. This is not an easy choice to make and we all know that. It’s hard to say no while others are going and I know that feeling of being left behind. That is 100% not the case here. There are many reasons for not attending & they are all personal choice. Once again, we understand and applaud you for making that difficult choice. Please know that this has not been an easy choice to make with people wanting to go and people not wanting to go. We weigh our decision every day. Workers are ready to go, entrants are ready to go, permits are in place and courses groomed are all very positive signs to proceed. On the other hand, we have people not wanting to go, not wanting us to have the event and people thinking we are making bad decisions. Please know that we go over & over every decision one at a time. As always, we put safety at the top of our list be it for the racers, workers, volunteers and anyone else attending the event. If anything changes concerning the COVID-19 virus we will quickly move to do whatever is necessary up to and including cancelling the event. As was said earlier, safety is first and foremost on our minds. In closing, for those who decide to attend please keep in mind, it’s up to ALL of us to keep everyone safe so let’s all do our part to make this event as safe as possible. To anyone who does not feel safe, simply don’t come, we totally understand. Thank you all for your time. Pat McDowell BNI Chairman Bill Lattin SCTA President
Is there any way to guess the probable attendance? Anyone know the pre-register rate compared to other years? I have been determined to go again this year as a spectator, but after thinking about the mask requirement in 101 degree heat, and no longer being a youngster, I am wondering about the ability of older folks (I hate hate hate that term, and can't believe I actually became one) to avoid extreme heat problems while people are continually re-breathing their own hot exhaust in 101 heat in the sun. Still haven decided whether to cancel, or to load up camping gear into the van yet. DOES IT LOOK LIKE A SMALL CROWD, OR STILL A BIG EVENT? I'm no quitter, but I'd hate to waste scarce resources on a dud when next year may be a super great one I might miss.. How do I find out if this year is still a big event, or I should save resources for next one? WHY BE ORDINARY ?
I would expect this will be a smaller event that normal. If you are sitting on the 3 mile watching cars go by I would think no one will care about you wearing a mask. Ether places may be more crowded Flashpoint streamliner will be back in 21. Or at least the new one. I think that would be something you want to see
Been thinking the same way and now I'm kinda on the fence as well..... I can relate this.....I live in a tourist area with lots of outdoor venues available . People are EVERYWHERE! I have never seen so many "tourists" here in my life. Every campground, hiking trail, lake, park, etc is overflowing with people. RV dealers are sold out. Traffic is crazy! I guess people just want to get away any way they can.... Since Speedweek seems to be the only motor sports thing going this summer, I'm wondering if it will be a total mob scene?
I would say that the only places where social distancing would be tight out at the race course would be the staging lanes and in the pit tents. It is not that hard to have space. This is a BIG event venue. Phil
That’s kinda what I’m thinking! With everything else being canceled, there may be more people at Bonneville that ever? Maybe not more cars, but probably more spectators......maybe! Bones
From what i hear the hotel rooms are not filling up as they would if hoards of spectators were coming.
Depending on how many state lines you need to cross if are driving a guy might get turned around or quarantined somewhere. Given all the screwed up news and false this and that it hardly seems worth it. It’s a shame after all the work SCTA has put into it....and that no-one will know for sure it is going on until you get to the end of the road on the first day and they send you out on the salt.
"No-one will know for sure it is going on until you get to the end of the road on the first day and they send you out on the salt." And then some federal or state officials come along and declare that their regulations are not being enforced and shut the whole thing down before it starts. There's a lot of territory out there – and certainly not enuf volunteers to enforce them – even if the "participants" would listen to them. You've all got your rights under the Constitution!!! (Even if you've never read it.)
