The Studebaker Racing site and the Studebaker Drivers Club site have lots of real information from guys that have a bunch of experience with these engines.

It’s still “knocking”, but I’m still driving it. The noise sounds to be coming from the top of the timing cover. I’ve inspected the oil psi relief and made sure the hole was clear. I did have the piston in backward (if it matters).
I checked it over fairly thoroughly with a stethoscope and couldn’t really hear it anywhere else. I’m wondering if it is crank endplay? Would I hear that in other locations though?

You might not have rod end play if the piston was in backward.

As you know, there is nothing at the top of the timing gear cover.
Other than possibly the plate that holds the cam is is loose, and the cam is moving back and forth.

I finally got my Stude manifold done -
It was originally a small Chevy V-8 intake. Heavy modifications both inside and out to work (hopefully !) on my 299 inch Stude.

I’m really dreading tearing all apart, but I need to eventually. Hopefully it’s something simple like that.
Cool intake btw! I’ve never seen anything setup like that.

I agree with Mike about the cam plate. It could also be the fuel pump. Is yours a Stude pump or did you do the modified Chrysler pump that Jake and I tried? That's the one that quit a little past Gold Field on the first Texas trip.

Thanks. I just hope it works like it looks. I have a single four barrel top too.

    Hightone -
I know you said that you have an electric fuel pump, did you install the eccentric on the end of the cam ? Like was said, could possibly be the eccentric flopping around too.

It has been years since I assembled the motor, but I did have intentions of running a mechanical pump so that is a possibility. Guess I could pull the block off plate to inspect inside there first?

What water pump do you have in it. There different impeller depths out there. If you have the wrong one, or even over torque a standard pump, the impeller can contact the inside of the coolant manifold and cause the noise you are hearing. Check the link below.

I imagine I’d hear that in the water pump/manifold. It’s got the Avanti pump.

Did you check to see if the pipe plug in the distributor tower is in place? There have been many occasions where shops/builders have overlooked replacing this vital plug after the cleaning the oil galleries.
This huge internal leak if present results in abysmal oil pressure.

Haven't seen him on any Stude sites either.
The Drivers site, or the Racing site.

He is working hard keeping his shop open. I haven't seen him in a while. I'll check on him.
