Technical diaphragm pressure plate

looking for a diaphragm pressure plate that will bolt to ford 1952 flathead flywheel.
like to have a part # might be able to buy at local part house thanks

Stock '52 Ford would be a 9 1/2" Long style pressure plate. At this stage, don't care about "spline".

 

Part number was CA30. 51/52 Truck PP

 

I’m not sure that a Ford ever used anything other than a Long bolt pattern on their flywheels then or if there is a diaphragm with that pattern but you could have a standard GM diaphragm pattern drilled into yours. A good machine shop can do this. Do remember that the diaphragm style pressure plate comes off the flywheel at a 90* angle where the long is near 45* angle so you may need a smaller diameter to clear your bell housing That may not affect the Ford flathead.

 

this just came up on the fordbarn recently. from that, it was thought that there is no diaphragm style that works with a known throw out bearing for the stock ford.

 

I know there are some diaphragm pressure plates that directly replace Longs. Check out your NAPA or your local clutch re-builder.
The '49-'53 Mercury flywheels are drilled for Borg & Beck plates which have the same evenly spaced bolt pattern as common GM diaphragms.
Diaphragms have two designs; straight finger for large inputs and T/O bearings, and bent finger for smaller inputs and T/O bearings, like the one pictured below on my '32s flathead using a stock '51 Mercury T/O bearing, which is basically the same bearing as '49-'53 Ford/'51-'53 Mercury car.

The pre-8BAs used Long style plates, both Ford and Merc. Your choice is re-drilling the flywheel for a B&B/diaphragm plate, or use an aftermarket flywheel that are usually drilled for Long and B&B/diaphragm bolt patterns.

 

Redrilling the flywheel is a slam dunk for any machine shop. A guy could do it at home with a drill press if he was at all proficient at measuring.

I’m not a late model Ford guy but I believe they do use the Long style bolt pattern on pressure plates and flywheels.

 

Ford stopped using the Long pressure plate in the '70s when they switched to the diaphragm.

 

@V8 Bob , I agree, but I think they have the Long bolt pattern on their clutches.

The photo is of a clutch job in a 1993 F150, it shows two bolts close together in three pairs, Long style. F150 might be too big but maybe a Ranger pickup clutch would work.

 

I know that Ford used a Long style bolt pattern on some of their diaphragms, just not sure if the dimensions are the same as the older Longs. Finger height is also another critical dimension.
