  1. I was there. Trust me, the Greeks engine was straight up.

    "Engine dump", that's funny..!

Doesn't take much thought into realizing that the angle of the engine depends solely on the height...of the engine.
The rear end, driveshaft, and engine mounting height have the sole say in how much angle there is/will be.
If the engine is mounted high enough that the drive shaft is parallel to the ground, the engine will be pretty high, with the crankshaft, parallel to the ground.
If the designer wants the engine lower, the engine will have a measurable downward drop in the front. It's all just a straight line from the pinion gear to the front of the crankshaft.

Not many...IF any Fuel Dragsters had "U-joints".

Tom Prufer referred to a steep engine angle as the "Tampa Dump", as I recall.

  4. Was Big Daddy from Tampa?

  5. Yes. His shop was on Nebraska Ave. :D

BTW, I'd heard it called "Tampa Dump" as well. Apparently, they'd connect the engine, clutch, and rear axle with wheels & tires, then lower the oilpan/ crank hub onto a wood 2x4 on the floor, then attach that assembly to the frame.

I bet @Pete Eastwood could teach us the facts on the subject- he restored Ed Pink's "Old Master" dragster, that had a pretty noticeable dump. Pics are in TRJ.

Big Daddy had an earlier shop I believe in Sefner, Florida which is very close to Tampa.
They used to test their cars in those days at Twin Cities Drag Strip in Oldsmar, Florida out near Race Track road.

Nothing odd or funny about referring to “dump”, and it has another counterpart when it comes to dragster or funny car racing, how far “out” is the engine? Not everyone followed the same formula for chassis building and there were different ideas tried all the time.

First photo is Dennis “Mr Six” Priddle at Ellington airstrip in the car that he used to make the first six second run outside of North America.
The second is the “Texas Weasel” of Prentiss Cunningham that was one of Raymond Beadle’s early rides.

A little too new for this thread John- pix should be pre 1965 ( although there is a little leeway for period shots of front motor diggers)

Looks like a fire burnout that might not have ended well, since it appears buildup in wheel well is now burning.

No wonder the left front tire still has the sticker on it, it's never used! Seriously though a lot of those X frame cars launch line that and it seems normal. Ask BSL409 on here.
