I think his access was due to his fun loving personality. When he came to shoot a feature at my shop he kept us in stitches with his stories. He was also very free with compliments if he liked what he saw. At least that was my experience. I couldn’t believe that they sent a legend to my humble shop. (A very different experience compared to some other magazine guys who came to shoot photos)
Thanks for posting Loudbang, looking forward to more.

    From the top.
Can’t help on the Olds but the motorcycle is the Leppan, Tremulis, Bruflodt bike that at the time was the world’s fastest 2 wheeler. The Shelby American shot is from the Venice Beach shop prior to production being moved to the LAX location.
The jeep is from Brian Chuchua’s shop. Brian was a Hot Rod Magazine favorite in the mid 60’s when the magazine covered the rapidly expanding off road arena.
I am guessing that the NASCAR photo is from Riverside in January of 65. The Motor Trend 500 ran for 185 laps and was won by Dan Gurney in the Wood Brothers #121 from Junior Johnson. They were the only cars to complete the full distance while Scotty Cain in the #45 finished 7th a full 13 laps back. Bob Thompson in the #19 was a dnf with engine issues after just 26 laps so the photo is from early in the race.

Always liked the all business look of the Oldsmobile. They were fast, they also seemed to ride and handle better then the other GM A bodys. The Olds engine had a real nice distinct tone too.

  18. This Mustang is bad ass! 14 inch wheels, teardrop hood scoop, and slicks: very '60s.

I sure miss my subscription to Hot Rod Deluxe, one of my favorites because they would show all of the old photos like this from the archives

I think that you will find that they are 15” wheels as this appears to be the prototype A/FX Mustang. And it is “very 60’s” because the photo is from early 1965

It is one of the early Mustangs run by a famous ford team before the paint work. But for the life of me I can't remember which team. I have posted more photos of it here on the HAMB in the Super stock thread.

  27. This car sold at a Mecum Auction a few years back. Some really great pictures from what it looks like now can be found here: https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0118-312670/1965-ford-mustang-afx-gas-ronda/

    From the top:
Anthony Joseph Foyt after putting his car on the pole for the ‘65 Indy 500

Dick Scritchfield’s 32 roadster which is now restored to the McGee configuration as seen on the cover of Hot Rod in the 1940’s. The car is owned but Bruce Meyer.

I guess the this was showcasing modern electronics in a Riviera

Nye Frank and George Klass’s Pulsator with Floyd Lipencotte Jr (aka Bob Muravez) at the wheel using a strategically placed hand to hide his presence.

John Snyder and Nandi Haase after winning the Hot Rod Magazine championship drags at Riverside with their Rader Wheels backed dragster
