    upload_2020-6-25_3-52-51.png Thanks, SD Prowlers

    Hello,

With a club that has a T-Bucket logo, how could anyone not build a custom T-bucket as his daily driver and ride to many So Cal hot rod events? I had never ridden in an open T roadster before I saw this cool roadster in San Diego. We were down there for a photo shoot on Lee Bright’s chopped Ford Sedan Delivery and the roadster was at the same SD Prowlers picnic.

Later on during the day, while talking to the owner of the roadster, it was incredible to listen and see the build details on the open T Bucket. Then we were going to a different area of the park, I was able to get a ride and what a ride it was. The previous year, I was able to get a ride in Jack Stewart’s immaculate red 1932 roadster. That was thrilling with the wind in our hair and noise blasting by us going down the street.
upload_2020-6-25_3-53-38.png T Bucket from the San Diego Prowlers
But, this T-Bucket ride was different. It was open, lower to the ground and the 8 individual exhaust pipes made a smooth mellow, but powerful sound on acceleration. Open roadsters seem to give an “outdoorsy” feel, but the two experiences were different. It seemed like I could touch the ground or anything sitting in the T-bucket. It was like a dragster built for the street with nice seating and accommodations.

If we were to ever build a hot rod that required open exhaust pipes, this is the style and look that we would select. I did ask how the mellow sound was able to pass the CHP road exhaust check points. The owner at the time, Fred Castro, told me of a custom baffle system inside of each pipe. That and the certain rpm would almost make the sound of the 8 pipes so quiet that it would not bother any CHP car in the next lane.

    Thank you, Fred…

Fred is no longer with us, but the roadster is still in the San Diego area at last recall.

  6. And, sadly, there will be no more Prowlers picnic events. :(

I love car club's,been in 4 in the passed and one now. Dose seem a trend, that only a few are the makers an shakers,an rest follow, all good guys. Club's that last a long time, have those makers an shakers,an if they pass on,often the club's have lost the glue. Big respect for those guys that are that club glue. 1005.JPG

I happened to be in San Diego and able to attend one of their picnics back in the mid 90's. It was great seeing some of the rods that I'd seen in the mags over the years

  9. Yes, some really nice cars in their club. Unfortunately, the members are getting up there, and don't want the hassle of putting on an event anymore. I feel very lucky to have been able to attend the final picnic.

The biggest issue is every venue, even city parks, seem to want $1 million insurance policies to hold a picnic, plus IIRC now the Health Department wants to impose permits and standards. This just pushed the costs of a picnic out of sight for the club. This is based on a conversation at the Prowler's booth at the Escondido Cruising Grand event in 2019. I think they will still have runs that outsiders may attend.

Their booth displayed some of the personal and Club memorabilia that Club members have left with the Club historian and its pretty amazing.

It appears to have an interesting front suspension. What I can see of the front end photos, it looks like maybe quarter elliptic springs serving double duty as the lower links of a 4-bar suspension? Anyone else see that or do maybe my eyes deceive me?

Are you sure that's Werksman's car? His was Ardun powered. Otherwise very similar.
