Hot Rods ARE RED WHEELS GETTING POPULAR AGAIN?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jul 11, 2020.

  1. Had yellow wheels on my high school hot rod (1960 =/-). Have had red wheels for the past 25 years on my current '40 coupe.....aluminum mags before red.....

I’m going with body color wheels with poverty caps on black wall rolling stock.

I'm a black wheel fan as I have them on 3 of my deuces but when I built my 5 window a little over a year ago it was black suede and I put red Wheel Smith steelies on it. Looked good.

Red has always been a great color for wheels

  13. Hmm, I didn't know they ever fell out of favor. I have always seen a lot of them. Perhaps the trend is regional.

Don’t know if they are coming back, it was an option to have wheels painted the color of the pinstripe.

  21. Sorry young man, back in the 50,s 60,s full hubcaps and red rims were the popular choice on any colored car. I was there unlike you youngsters. In fact your dad was running that combo on his green coupe! Shame!

Last car I had with red wheels was a 54 Ford which was painted a light green back in 63.
I painted them black soon after. ;)

I hope not too. I don't care for red or black wheels. Aluminum, polished or satin for me.....

  24. It's always been traditional to uncork the headers, and put on the red rims with slicks. It means your ready for business. Or it just looks good for Christmas. lol 1531.jpg

  25. Some people are just catching up on red wheels, some are catching up on black wheels and some are still building their dream Boyd style car.

So it all depends of your reference point and who you talk to.

To each their own, but I’m just not into red wheels. Or the wide whites that often go with them for that matter.

My cars are always black, and if they have painted wheels I like to do a color (blue / green / maroon) that is very dark to the point you have to pay attention to see they aren’t black. Just a sneaky amount of color against the black.

Interesting thread, since I blasted two wheels today for my Merc. They will be a bright blue by tomorrow afternoon. I think they will "pop" as well as red wheels, and will fit into the long term vision if my 49.

99% red wheels here, easier to clean and touch up and a lot cheaper than chrome or polished alloy.must say though not a fan of the white wall flaps that seem to go with them a lot.gotta run a set of wide white crossplies to set them off along with chrome caps and trims.
