  1. The purple is hooked to the ignition I believe...I gotta dig my notes..

Purple is kind of the universal GM color for the wire that runs from the ignition, through the neutral safety switch and on to the starter solenoid to energize it. I plumb all my cars alike so I always know where that wire is headed. I have a friend that is color blind, man I hate working on his cars.

  3. If I go with the 3 post starter...can I just "add" the smaller red and black to the red "battery" wire going to the fourth post?
    They are connected anyways right?

If I'm not mistaken the other small terminal by passes the resister wire for the ignition so it is only hot when the starter is energized to give the coil 12 volts on start up.

Not knowing where everything is headed I'd be shooting blind. On a 4 post GM starter the two small posts are labeled R and S. I cant tell from the pictures the labeling on the solenoid. The purple wire (ignition switch) should go to the S post. The R post is used on early GM vehicles to supply voltage to the coil during cranking I believe.

  6. This is the wiring I followed per speedway instructions

I had a LT-1 vette that used 12 volts to start supplied from that R terminal, then 8-9 volts after starting to run the early GM transistorized ignition. Someone left that wire off during starter replacement once upon a time and made that corvette the hardest starting car I have ever owned until I figured it out.

  8. And this

    Except I don't have an 80 amp alt..just a regular alt

I have seen a lot of wiring diagrams that run the one wire output on the alt to the starter like the above. I prefer to run it through a kill switch but that is just me. On your photo, where are the red and black leads on the other small solenoid post headed? Are they the + coil leads? Why 2 of them and why is one black?

They are only connected when the starter solenoid is energized to start the engine.

  11. So I just peeled the "black" wire you just asked about, It is the soleniod wire (red) with a "fusible link"(black) it goes to the "Battery" side of the ignition switch

the RED wire is attached to the BIG RED BATTERY cable ,I honestly dont remember why I connected it like that it didnt come with the kit...it can be cut off..

Thats easier to understand, the way I had it with the smaller wire coming out of the POSITIVE side of the battery Cable,,the solenoid was energizing the solenoid and coil at all times..

if you guys havent read the entire thread. I am running HEI ..
    tthanks for all the help

That explains why it is black and on + post. Always scares me to see black wires on positively charged posts. Makes me think of fire extinguishers and sirens.

I could go scan your post but it's late, what are you running for a distributor and coil? Where is that fusible link headed?

  13. The fusible link heads to the battery terminal on the ignition switch...the ignition switch has the purple wire u see on the starter post that energizes the starter to spin...
The ignition switch also has the coil wire that supplies 12v for starting and running...
I believe I can hook the battery and solenoid wire together and leave the purple(S) Switch wire on the other terminal... I will try tomorrow

  14. It was a fucking mess..
But in the end I swapped solenoids and everything is good to go

  15. is it running good?

  16. To me it's running rough...like a vibration it didn't have before...
I checked all spark plugs wires and the firing order everything looks good..
It could be a bad spark plug...
    I hope

  17. Wow it's only been 4 months...
I figured the running rough part/noise,it was a loose flywheel...
The bolts got loose with time and made that noise...it ran great after I fixed it..
I stored it at a friend's garage for a few months but I'm losing that space...
I'm getting it out of there on Friday morning, then I'll go to NV DMV to get it inspected, then I'll trailer it to California for a few months...I'm in the process of buying my first house at the end of the year... hopefully having my own space, will lead to many more projects coming out of it.. 18. Lost my space in the garage so I took the day off and rented an U-Haul trailer.I could only rent it for 6 hrs...picked it up at 7:30am, started loading at 8am,finished at 8:45am..it barely fit, thank goodness it runs/drives.
Took it to DMV inspector, got the paper at 9:30...drove 100 miles, drove it off the trailer, turned around and started driving back to return the trailer at 2:00 pm.....
Hope to get tags and plates next month.

It was 100 degrees when I loaded it,111 when I unloaded it...
Burned my wrist and arm with the exhaust pipe...
    Worth it.
