  1. I welded the bungs in today, I drilled all the rivets out of the frame.
The plan is a suicide front end

  7. The vintage racecar is one step closer, the backing plates are drilled!
The lay out was dad's idea simple, neat and clean!
After drilling the 60th hole I was thinking "I wonder what Stewart Friesen is doing right now?" Dad drilled some too.

  12. I got out to the garage good and early this morning to get a good full day's worth of chassis work in.
However an unexpected (but welcomed) visitor brought me a box full of vintage race flyers, photos and scrapbooks.
This led to a two hour B.S. session/history lesson.

I did get the frame leveled side to side/front to back, squared, and the front crossmember removed, and a test fit of the new crossmember.

My Kirkey vintage series race seat arrived as well.

  13. Took a road trip yesterday to study to cage of an old Olson Chassis (Now TEO). Come spring I have to dig it out and bring it home.

The coolest part was the DPS (Don's Porting Service) decal on the chassis.
Don Green was the go to high performance machine shop/engine builder in this area.
They did work for the top oval track racers as well as Jack and Shirley Muldowney.
Don's brother George and nephew Tom did the machine work and porting on my engine.

  14. Figured my engine/transmission mounts, radiator cage placement, ride height, front axle rear frame kick/stretch for Chrysler leaves.

This is no where near ride height, it will be much lower.

I put in a large Speedway order which should be here Thursday or Friday.

2"x2" placement represent the cage placement.

  17. Sometimes sacrifices must be when building a vintage racecar.
    upload_2021-1-24_16-25-21.png upload_2021-1-24_16-31-49.png upload_2021-1-24_16-27-25.png upload_2021-1-24_16-30-36.png upload_2021-1-24_16-33-34.png upload_2021-1-24_16-36-39.png

I was after the rear rails to kick/stretch the frame for Chrysler leaves.
    upload_2021-1-24_16-38-30.png

This is roughly what I am planning with more kick
    upload_2021-1-24_16-42-39.png

The work that someone had done on the front half, it wasn't that big a sacrifice.
Just because you have access to a welder doesn't mean you should be allowed to use it!
This is modern work, the the motor mounts and and wishbone mounts are out of the current Speedway catalog. upload_2021-1-24_16-45-13.png upload_2021-1-24_16-46-7.png upload_2021-1-24_16-47-0.png upload_2021-1-24_16-47-58.png

  18. I didn't get as much done as I wanted, I had to repair my snow blower for the 9"-12" of snow coming tomorrow.
I did remove the middle crossmember and set the engine in the chassis it's not in the final placement

Robert, what carb and how many cfm for your Clifford Intake?

Robert J. Palmer and loudbang like this.
  22. 500 CFM Rochester 2BBl modified by JET performance for oval track racing.
It runs Holley jets, worked power valves, etc... it was a very common carburetor in street stock, what is called north east ProStock in the and Sportsman, until these classes required the use of the GM 602/604 create engine.

  23. I was only able to spend a couple hours in the garage today, I cleaned the frame for welding, dad and I figured the frame kick pieces.
I also started the engine mount

I run a 1954 261 in my first series 55 3100 pickup with that same exhaust and a Eddy Edmond's intake with two glass bowl Holleys and Fenton ratioed rockers. After crossing the nation twice and up and down it many times. I can only say it's the best thing I ever built. The factory three and over makes highway driving at 70plus MPH easy and fun.

  25. I started to prefab my frame kick and stretch

  26. I ended up with another short day today, I tacked my kick/stretch pieces, and test fit them to the frame. I am going to take them back to work to be sandblasted, before I weld them to the frame.

  27. I had a good weekend, managed to get a fair amount done.

I got the rear frame sections completely welded.
Dad had an idea to add a piece of 1/4" plate for extra weld kick to frame.

Our class rules say "no tubing rails must have stock rails" I didn't see anything about the rails having to be from the same frame.

    I also got my spring pads built, 3" Channel- upload_2021-2-21_17-3-44.png upload_2021-2-21_17-5-51.png upload_2021-2-21_17-7-38.png

As I was doing that dad was jigging up and laying out the spring slider mounts, I dilled and cut them.

  30. I lost all of last weekend to a wicked cold, so I tried to may up for it this weekend.

I jigged up the rear kick tacked it up double checked it's placement, and cut and tacked in 1 3/4 .095 wall D.O.M. (Roll Cage material) crossmember.

    upload_2021-3-7_18-10-21.png upload_2021-3-7_18-14-9.png upload_2021-3-7_18-16-33.png upload_2021-3-7_18-19-10.png upload_2021-3-7_18-20-45.png upload_2021-3-7_18-23-1.png

I removed the rear crossmember and welded in some 2" square tube (dad's idea) for strength under the frame kick.
