Hello! It's my first post here. I stumbled upon a 4th of July swap meet yesterday and bought a Ford truck cowl. I'm going to cut it up and reconfigure pieces of it for a very crazy custom roadster project I'm working on. It already has chunks stolen and quite a bit of rust through so I don't feel bad chopping it. I can't seem to figure out any way to tell if it's a 33 or 34 cowl. Without the roof or the rest of the cab it seems like there's no way to know? I removed the dash panel and found some original green paint. Don't think that helps with the year but nice to know it was green!
Don't know if there is a difference... but if you add the state you live in to your profile guys will know if you live close enough to trade or come over to help... I have the remains of 3 or 4 of those cowls, I have some of what you need... but shipping junk parts is a waste of time and labor... I live in maine, 04210. where are you ?
Thanks for the tip - I added my location - I'm in Austin, Texas. Once I get the pieces cut and fitted I'll need some more panels for sure. It would be cool if I could find whoever in Texas has all the ratty 32-34 truck metal.
When you are cutting it up to make your roadster, don't destroy the door hinge pieces. Those are hard to find and someone would be very glad to use them. Getting the screws out of them will be super tough, so unless it messes up your roadster configuration, it might just be easiest to just cut the area around the hinge away to get them out. The missing sections of your cowl look like they could just be replaced with some new pieces made from flat sheet.
The difference is that a 33 firewall is removable and the 34 firewall is not. Well, not easily anyway..
I cut them out yesterday as carefully as I could. I drilled and dremeled down the screw heads until the hinges popped into the cove, then made a few surgical cuts so I could bend the metal up and pull the hinges out. So I have: One complete hinge with the body side threads clean and clear. Two door side hinges with screw shafts in there but all threads should be good. One hinge that I goofed and accidentally drilled halfway through the thread on one of the holes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I figured out what sheet metal I’m going to need - I’m widening the cab and need two sections to get the metal shapes I need. I don’t need the air vent metal or the flat sheet metal, but I need the ridges and curves. I need duplicates of the two sections traced out in chalk: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
How so Don? I know the 32 Ford is removable but I always thought the 33 & 34 are spot welded in place. HRP
ditto HRP... spot welded in... Jacob, I have the section at the w/s for free plus shipping... how long do you need it ? have the cowl to firewall section but I may have cut out the raised ridge … will take pix...
Oops.. must have typed that before my morning coffee. I am guilty of spreading misinformation. Correctomundo...the 32 is removable and the 34 is welded in.
I weld the cowl top and vent into '30-'31 tank tops... reason for not leaving any top just before the raised "rail" ...
You know that cowl would make a great start to a woodie! @sloppy jalopies its great to see such Kindness from folks like yourself and helping a guy out.
I have been saying for years that if you find a full hight model A cowl, bring it home... stashes easy in a corner / attic ... a great start for a Woodie, a r pick up, a ute, or a depot hack... it will be there, waiting patiently for a gearhead grand kid !
Except that he backed out - decided it was too much hassle. So if anyone else has the sections I need please let me know.
I have the cowl broken down into usable units to be chopped and fitted. Found some extra original paint beneath the original serial plate. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I just wanted to add that Smitty - Sloppy Jalopies - came through and got me the metal chunks I was needing. Thanks Smitty! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
