    Who makes a low volume fuel pump that will last? Cheap ass pump only lasted one summer. I’m running a single Stromberg and a stock model A tank

    Does anybody here have experience with the Thomas high compression head sold by Snyder?
    It's rated at 6,7:1 compression ratio, to much for a street driven engine?

    Will be running a Model B engine with one Stromberg 97, stock B cam and probably a FSI distributor.

    6.7 to 1 fine to run on the street

    Interesting blurb in the SECRETS of SPEED SOCIETY magazine that came yesterday. Seems FAST turned over their member/subscription list to Charlie Yapp and there were only 60 names on the list that that weren't on the SOSS sub list.

    i ran a 7-1 lion speed head for several years . lots of go & no harmful effects . 126# cylinder pressure on all 4 . i think timing is the key to run one as a daily driver ............. steve

    Checking for the month
    Finally had time to get the engine back in the car but its been a fight the whole way.Cant get it started just wants to backfire.Figure its a timing issue but have double checked all of the logical possibiltys.May have to pull the cam cover off and double check the re-builder installed the new cam gear set on correctly,thats the only thing i havent double checked.Any other ideas ? banger.jpg

    I have been running the lion speed head for a couple years also, I like it and it runs fine.

    My speedster frame is on the back cover of this issue. I didn't know he was going to do that. I need to buy some more copies! :)

    Have you checked dist position? Rotor is pointing to correct spark plug?
    Verify #1 by removing plug and holding finger over hole while rotating motor. You will not be able to contain compression with finger. While you are at it, you can check visually if timing mark on pulley/balancer is close.
    Then, disconnect wire to coil and use ohm meter to set initial timing.

    Just an observation, if you are worried about timing gear installed correctly, you may need a different re-builder.

    Few things i have checked
    Marked crank shaft pulley with head off and check tdc with indicator,checked with finger with plug out seems correct,turned crank 180 and checked made no differance
    Have compression on all four cylinders
    Have spark on all four cylinders
    Checked number one was firing at right time with timing light
    Checked coil with meter shows good
    Double check plug wires in correct fire order 1243
    Distributor was on car last fall at hot rod hill climb worked well after we set curve
    Carb was on car last fall as well and worked great,will open up and double check
    Act really strange like timing is off
    Had the engine rebuilt in skokie,hope they know what there doing by now.
    Fighting the idea of putting in a good 283 thats waiting for a project

    Thanks for the answers about compression ratio.

    Seems like there will be no new Lion heads manufactured and kind of hard to find a used one here in Sweden.
    What other options than the Thomas head for HC are available new?
    Would prefer something that says "hot rod" instead of a stock looking head, just because. :rolleyes:

    It sounds like you have done all the checks, it should fire up and run.
    Maybe a manifold leaking air? or carby not happy?

    Charlie Yapp is making a rocket head now as we speak. It has the exact same combustion chamber as the lion head with a finned Flash Gordon look to it.
     
  23. Mikko, I think I would try to buy one of the new heads that Jim Brierley is making. There is a link to his book at the beginning of this thread. If you don't have his book I would suggest you buy it also.

    Todd Buttermore is making cast iron winfield red head copies with the crows foot combustion chamber at about 7.2 to 1..Nice thing about cast iron is uniform heating and no electrolysis..Ran a aluminum winfield repop 6 to 1 for a year with a cathode in the water inlet,you wouldn't believe the reaction effect on the cathode..it is normally a 1/2" rod,shit it was coated with that white crust of death almost to 1 inch,had to scrape it off to get it out..run a waste metal if you run aluminum

    Hi Brian:

    Talked to Gary this evening, and he mentioned your problem. Two additional things we talked about were the need to be certain you are firing on the compression stroke if your timing mark is on the crank pulley, and be sure your coil polarity is correct to get a good hot spark. If you are running 12 volts with negative ground be sure the negative side of the coil (if marked) is connected to the distributor. John Neilson mentioned using your thumb over the open number one plug hole to be sure you're on compression and not exhaust when you approach your timing mark; worth double or triple checking that. I have made the mistake of timing points on the wrong side of the cam lobe too, another thing to check, timing will be close but it won't fire. Hoping for success (leave the 283 in the corner)!

  26. I've run a Thomas head on a ported diamond B engine running factory babbit for about 12 years so far. It's been in the Fordor, Tourer, and currently resides in the Coupe. Toured Wales and France with it, a spot of drag racing, loads of daily miles. I'd say it'd be just fine.

    Mines the pointy chamber head, not the winfield style - I've seen both. Plug is nearer the bore on mine.

    Yes I've seen it.
    Hopefully there will be some reviews on them by the time my engine is ready for a head.

    Actually I bought the book from him a few months ago.
    He was very good to deal with so I'll send him an e-mail and see if there are any heads available.

    We questioned the tdc mark on the pulley to compression stroke.When the crank pulley comes to tdc the dot on the cam gear lines up with the hole in the cam cover.I would think that this confirms the right location to fire #1
