Technical Are these Ford starters & generators Y block or 226 6 cyl flathead ?

  1. Still cleaning up in the garage/shed and came across this stuff. Cleaned up a bit for the photo. All old 6 volt Ford but for what ? Not flathead V8. Five starters and five generators probably from the same type engine.

I'd think the generators are one size fits several applications. They look just like the one on my flathead six out in the trailer.
Starter, checking Mac's 6 volt Y block page it appears you have the market cornered on 6 V Y block starters if they are all 6V. https://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_late/starter-motor-remanufactured-6-volt-391197.html
This page shows the end plate along with some others with the same end plate

  5. I had a quick look at what is being offered on Ebay and there were a few generators like mine being offered for the straight six . Ford went to 12 volt in 1956 so i guess there could be both 6V and 12V in my pile .

  6. That starter with the red tag says 6 volt so that was easy. No tags on the others so more cleaning and searching for a few more letters and numbers.

I haven't fussed with Y blocks in a very long time, but these parts look Y block to me.
If the generator is 12 volt, it will be stamped 12 volt on the case.

  8. The 226 flat six starter mounts like the v8 with 2 thru bolts, no flange. They look like Y block or 223 six to me.

if you put the main case on 6v flathead starter armature, you now have a 12 volt starter. same with the generator although the out put is not huge. same part # on the armatures
